gunpowdercub (imported) wrote: Wed Sep 19, 2007 9:13 pm Hobbies? Who has time for hobbies? When my eyes can't read my work notes anymore, I go online looking for men into my particular fetishes. For someone close to a major city, I feel exiled and isolated a lot. My cat is a hobby, I suppose. She likes lots of attention. I also look for interesting internet vids, and when I could afford it, I played City of Heroes and City of Villains (pc games). Because it's free, I now play Dungeon Runners. It's not as much fun as CoH/CoV.

I listen to baseball on the radio...

and when I have no choice, I garden. I'm a renter, and a previous owner of this house left a huge uncontrollable garden. Things bloomed this year I have never seen bloom before. This is my 3rd or 4th summer here. For the first time, scarlet lilies bloomed in the front yard, for instance, and in the back, the Lilirope bloomed. There's always something blooming in the front yard. Even in winter, the Jasmine blooms. Too bad Jersey City doesn't like the garden. They decided the 6' Zebra Grass was a weed. It only covers an area the size of a trash can lid, but one neighbor didn't like it and complained. I had to cut down every tall plant and ornamental grass just a few weeks ago. In the process, I disturbed 3 stray puffball tiger kittens who no longer have a place to hide and play. Sad that a bitchy neighbor can call ignorant garden cops here to destroy nature.

And oh, I suppose one other hobby (that I can't afford anymore) is collecting and smoking Boswell pipes.
I enjoyed reading your account. Thanks.

My former wife told her therapist that her hobby was sex—I suppose that means that mine was the same.

Let's see, I also like traveling and love taking pictures of some of the sites I've seen. Here is a link of some my boyfriend and I took when I visited Portugal last year. I marked it on the map where I stayed. I love Castles, and I didn't get to make very close to the "Moorish Castle" in Sintra when I was there. If I do make it back to Portugal, I will get to the top of that castle. I did get pictures from a distance as you will see in the link. Also the "Palacio de Pena" which is a Palace. We drove past it, but I was a bit tired that day so didn't go take the tour. Wish I had though, I'm sure it was fascinating to see inside and out. http://picasaweb.google.com/home. You can also look these places up on google, is you look up Moorish Castle, add in Sintra because there are others in another country. I also like playing computer games, and am just starting on "World of Warcraft" :D Well, there's a few others but I can't remember them right now. "giggles"

love and hugs, Lilac

DeaconBlues (imported) wrote: Thu Sep 13, 2007 1:58 am I germanated 72 seeds this spring, now I only have 12 alive, and two of those are like bonsai trees, no more than ten to twelve inches tall, the other ten, are scattered between three feet to seven feet tall. I sure wish I knew what made that ONE grow right, and the others stunted. I used the same soil mix in all the pots. I hope to put the ten good ones in the ground next spring. But I had much higher hopes, I had wanted to be a latter day "Jonny Appleseed," guess I fancied myself "The Black Locust Avenger" or something. From what I READ it should be easy to get these trees going, but my experiences are pretty disappointing so far.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can supercharge my tree growing results? Any forrest rangers out there know much about making trees healthier?

I've been in Landscaping for over 20 years. Those trees grow like crazy here in NE GA. We have an abundance of red clay but they grow here anyway. They aren't supposed to like poorly-drained soils. According to my schooling, these trees like heavy limestone type soils. Go figure. They like water but don't like to sit in it. They also have wide-spreading surface-roots, like dogwoods. That could be hindering your growth in the pots.

Have you tried scarifying the seeds you plant? (Splitting or heavily scratching the hard shell; or planting them in manure, to weaken or soften the shell.)

I've heard of folks calling them Black Locust; we have two types here. Honey and yellow (AKA Black). Honey Locust has a fuzz in the bean-pod that you can put in your tea and sweeten it. It has no, or minimal thorns. People who like the Honey Locust usually make cuttings off the ones found with no thorns. The yellow has major 'thornage' and a ridiculous amount of bean pods littering the yard every year. The yellow goes wild easy too, where the Honey is less invasive.

Never heard of the Locust tree as 'Rare' before, we think of them a fence wood or weeds here. It does have an unusual wood and I have seen it finished. Nothing in it's right mind will eat the fence rails and they are almost never treated with any preservatives.

Aren't they illegal in Arizona? I could send you seeds if I knew the legals about shipping, etc.🍑👋:dong:🚬
