One way to avoid this issue is to provide the link to where it initially appeared, with proper credits to all authors involved. The explanation should be in the first paragraph, or summary. With proper documentation, this isn't a problem. I allow EA stories, with credits, to be reposted on other sites.

In fact, I just adore http://www.asstr.org/~PZA where a few of Pueros' and my stories reside in copy form. More are coming soon, as it's only updated once a month.

The issue of plagiarism doesn't come up too often, though. For one thing, with over 10k stories here, it's hard to know what has and hasn't been posted already! No, I don't remember each story! I'm not Mr. Data from Star Trek: TNG!

So if you're in doubt, provide the info I just suggested so I can verify it.

Yes, my temper gets a bit short some days with the EA holding bin, I admit.

Also, if you send me an email with a valid subject line like "Problem with my EA story post" I will read it and get back to you. I do ignore ones like "My story was rejected."

Hello? Read the guidelines, then just TRY and get one posted to Nifty.

Ha!

I base that supposition on the fact that his story didn't get published. He and I worked together on developing his story, but he didn't know how to post it, so I posted it for him with his permission. My mistake was not knowing how to 'prove' I had his permission. Sorry about that. I hope I'm not banned from the site as a result of mine and his clumsiness.

If you still have it, post it again and explain this in the summary section.

I will have a look at it.

🆘

When you post, it's posted as if "by you."

There is no other data to see.

💡

What Plix refers to here is taking an existing story from somewhere and claiming it as your own. As I mentioned, this happened with "Caught Flat". Only the names were changed.;)

I reposted the story with some changes to make it less 'problematic'. I also added a comment at the end suggesting communication with the author at his email address to confirm that were legitimately in 'cahoots' with each other in developing the story. Please note also that I just got some editorial credit from 'curious guy' for his story 'The War'. I guess a good turn only gets you a worm.

The story "Who's Bigger Now?" is written by "Unknown." Because of this, I cannot ask him for permission to release my expanded version. I provide "Editor's Notes" to provide information about the differences between the original version and my own. I do not claim that that I do not use his story as the basis for mine. In fact, I keep much of the original text because it provides the story line from the narrator's POV.

When the original author chooses to remain anonymous, is one allowed to expand a story as I have done in this case?

I, years ago now, submitted "Alice (Revised)," making it clear that I had tried to contact "BryanDoug" without success. I made it clear at the start of the story that that was case. That one was posted, and I would to like to post this one also, and NOT be treated as a plagerist. I enjoy the expanded version, and would like to allow other to also.

Original is at: https://eunuchworld.co/s1690

I will send my version and hope you choose to post it.

Thank You...

As long as you credit the original story, I do not see a problem with it.

Submit it and I will publish it.

Is it a continuation or a revised version?

As Paolo intimated, above, plagiarism is when you fail to give credit. If you give credit so that people can see what the original author wrote (e.g. a link) I can't see how it could be plagiarism.

It would be my understanding that anonymous works, like any works published on this site, have a copyright. The question of permission/license is something else, even beyond the question of how to get permission if the author is truly anonymous.

"Derivative works" might be something limited by a particular copyright license. It might be that the site should have a specific policy about anonymous works, such as asserting that usage, under a story's assumed copyright, be licensed under one of the Creative Commons licenses, unless the author specifies a different license. (It might be made a condition of submitting a story that the author indicate a specific license, which would default to one of the CC licenses.)

But that's all just legal stuff. What's probably more important is showing respect for each other. Providing links to works on which yours is based, asking the original author(s) for permission, things like that are just polite ways of dealing with each other. For anonymous stories, unless the original author included other instructions, make a good faith effort to contact the author, give credit, and be prepared to take the story down if the original author surfaces in a creditable way and objects to what you have done ... not because there is a law about it, but because it is the right way to treat each other.
