Injection Question?

Post by stealth0322 (imported) »

I appreciate all of the answers the old timers are giving to the new people. I was reading the post on how properly administer Depo Provera injections, which was quite helpful. The concern that I have now, as a wait for my injections to come in the mail. What would happen if I accidentally inject Depo Provera into one of my major arteries in my buttocks? Should this be a concern?

Stealth,

That is a major concern with all deep-muscle shots. Make sure to pull back on the plunger once in and check for blood. If you find some, move the needle out a bit and try again. Good luck.

DonnyMac is right. Indeed, you have to be sure to pull back the plunger to see if there is any blood. And if so, relocate the needle.

But there is anatomical structure you don't want to hit. It is the sciatic nerve. Basically it is that nerve going down to the leg. It carries motor and sensory nerves. Cutting it would leave that leg paralysed, without any feeling, but possibly with phantom pains.

One has to prick the upper outer quadrant of the buttock. This is the only safe place. No nerves, and no major blood vessels are there.

Take care.
