Urologist complaining about gang initiation

Apparently a gang initiation required guys to shoot themselves in the nuts:

A urologist generally treats kidney stones, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, STDs and the odd misadventure in masturbation. But through working the night shift, Patel is no stranger to gunshot wounds, stabbings and other trauma. And then there are those calls that could only come in the middle of the night.

“There was this street gang, and part of each new member’s initiation was to shoot his testicle. So we got this series of calls one night where guys would come in with bullet wounds on their testicles. And it really annoyed me because it was my specialty. I finally told the last guy, ‘Tell your gang lord or whatever to please think of a better initiation. You guys are going to make me die of sleep deprivation because you keep shooting yourselves in the nuts.’ ”

I'm not familiar with the NYPost.com, but this sounds a bit like an urban legend.

It seems strange that prospective gang members would be idiotic enough to do something like this. Getting jumped in or fucked into a gang is one thing, but blowing your balls off? Is there some new kind of eunuch gangs that I've not heard of? Kids these days.
