Why has the list of new stories not changed ?

Post by Bagoas (imported) »

The list of new stories has not changed for at least two, possibly three weeks. Is no one but me submitting new stories? This seems MOST unlikely. Is there some problem with accepting new stories ? I have submitted three in the past three days, none of which has yet appeared in the list.

I notice that this morning there were 15 new stories that needed to be approved. Now there are 14 to be approved. I really hope that they didn't throw mine out. It was my first effort.

We could write a story about how the stories stuck in the reviewing bin have to play out the same thing over and over until they make it into the archive.

Could it be thaqt the people who read them to approve them like them so much that they are getting off on them and can't make them public because they are so busy enjoying them? LOL!

I have just finished going through the stories that were awaiting approval, and I have done so several times in the last two weeks.

According to the story page, there have been 18 stories approved in the last seven days, and more before that.

When I put 14 into the new story index as the number of days, I get stories published on June 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, and 15.

Recently I have not published as often as I have in the past, but the stories are being published :)

What people here need to keep in mind is that all stories are vetted before being validated. Someone goes through each story to make certain that the topic is appropriate for the Archive. Some, surprisingly, are not even remotely connected to an Archive theme. Stories that have too many spelling, grammatical, or formatting errors to be easily corrected are also not approved. If they seem to have a kernel that might be of interest, the original author is asked to make revisions.

Only TWO people do all of the reading and editing. One person for the German language stories and Plix for everything else. Remember that Plix is a young person who has an active life outside the Archive. He's doing a great job, though there are days when he's too busy to do any serious editing.

I think he's doing a great job.

Thank you very much for the explanation. It is good to know these things. I am new here, but I can well imagine how much time it takes to review all of the story material. Thanks again.

It is probably a good thing that I am not the editor. I like to edit with a reciprocating saw. :D :D

One suspects that Kristoff would also philosophize with a hammer.

Whilst the issue of who's moderating story submission seems to have been cleared up (though the exact use of the chain saw seems still to be a tad subjective), I think an aspect of Bagoas' original question may have been passed over, because I suspect that the list of new stories on the "front page" is not always up-to-date. Certainly, at this moment the 10 "new stories" I'm seeing on the front page does not include the very latest one posted (Gruppensex)

I'm tending to ignore the front page and instead "drill now" to the "new stories" link on the "Stories" page. This may be because what is happening is that the earliest 10 "new stories" are being listed. This may be a deliberate choice on the part of the programmer; if so it needs to be noted because a documented bug is, of course, a "feature".

Part of the issue with the front page list is that its creation does not happen automatically, but rather takes an extra, separate, step or two after the editors have done all their approving. I'm still working on having it happen automatically.

As well, due to the way RSS works (specifically the automatic reader on the front page), there may be a time delay of up to an hour between when the RSS feed is updated, and the front page updates to reflect the new feed. This can most easily be seen on the other column, with the new message posts.

As for what stories are listed, provided it's been updated, and the feed has refreshed, it should display the 10 most recently approved stories, if I've managed the database lookup properly.

(Of course, the RSS feed creation has been coded entirely by hand, and I'm still working out a few bugs, such as how to automatically replace a slew of windows-1252 characters with their iso-8859-1 counterparts. Single quotes are proving particularly irksome.)
