Satyricon By Petronius Arbiter
Have any of you read this old work? It contains a good survey of Castration in Ancient settings, including an elaboration on the Legend of Semiramis, the queen that kept a harem of castrated attendants

Re: Satyricon By Petronius Arbiter
not exactly what the book is best known for, but yes, I'm familiar with it. Fellini did an interesting film version/variation on it back in the late 60s/early 70s.
Re: Satyricon By Petronius Arbiter
"The disgusting indecencies of which the remains of Petronius are full....give him so bad a name that he who confesses an intimate acquaintance with the fiction, and expresses gratification in it, exposes himself to a severe judgement and affords a good opportunity for the display of sanctimonious hypocrisy!"
- Nierbuhr (1776-1831)
Naturally, being a sanctimonious hypocrite and liker of 'disgusting indecencies', I've included Petronius as a heroic character in my ongoing (some would say never-ending) factual saga here entitled 'Nero'.
