Some folks clain that Gustav Mahler followed Wagner's tendency to play music slowly. That may be one reason that Leonard Bernstein's recordings of the Mahler symphonies are some of Bernstein's best work. I prefer faster tempos than this tradition, but slowpacing works with the Mahler First.
