A-1 may have provided a link to Consumption Junction, but Westboro Baptist is for real. Unfortunately, this is not quite as far out onto the fringe as "christianity" goes. There are even worse out there.

While Jerry Falwell was certainly hateful (and now dead), and while he perverted “Christianity” to his own ends, the original post here is about Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church – an organization that makes Falwell seem benign. Here are the opening paragraphs about WBC from Wikipedia:

Westboro Baptist Church

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is a controversial U.S. church headed by Fred Phelps and based in Topeka, Kansas. It runs the websites www.GodHatesFags.com, www.GodHatesAmerica.com and others expressing condemnation of homosexuals, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Swedes, African Americans, Canadians, Americans, and other groups. The organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League, and classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The group has achieved national notoriety in recent years due to its picketing of funeral processions for soldiers killed in combat, which functions as an extension of the Phelps' anti-United States beliefs.

While its members identify themselves as Baptists, the Church is an independent church not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist (sometimes called "Old School") and Calvinist principles. Its first public service was held on the afternoon of Sunday, 27th November 1955.

The Church bases its work around the belief expressed by its best known slogan and the address of its primary website, "God hates fags", and expresses the opinion, based on its Biblical eisegesis, that nearly every tragedy in the world is linked to homosexuality – specifically society's increasing tolerance and acceptance of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. It maintains that God hates homosexuals above all other kinds of "sinners" and that homosexuality should be a capital crime.

Although I generally feel the urge to vomit when I have to listen to jingoistic rhetoric, I am compelled by the Spirit to say to Mr. Phelps.........

"America: Love it or leave it"

Falwell was just an awful fellow. I read antrhopologist Susan Harding's study of his point-of-view. Just an awful fellow. I grew up with men like him. In some ways, I understand why people follow people like Falwell, but I don't understand how that justifies his meanness.
