Dividing a story into parts/chapters

Post by curious_guy (imported) »

I am almost finished writing a new story. It is over 120,000 bytes and over 23,000 words long.

Should I divide it into parts before I post it on the archive? Should I divide it into chapters and post it as one part or should I post it as it is? (It is divided into paragraphs.)

It would probably be a good idea to divide it into parts. Just to make it a little easier on your readers :)

What size do you suggest for each part?

When doing something long, I usually aim for about 8-10k words per chapter. Plix may differ, though. Obviously, short chapters are NOT going to be a problem for you!

8-10k words per chapter seems a little long to me. Did you really mean to write 8-10k BYTES per chapter.

Hardly. 8 to 10K Bytes would be about, what, 16 words? P writes chapters a bit longer than some, the same as others. I generally shoot for about 5-6 pages on the rare occasion that I write such things.

Well, yeah, but I was talking novel form, too.

Sorry.

I was half asleep when I read that.

You missed the K Which means Kilobytes. (A kilobytes is either 1,024 or 1,000 bytes.) Ten kilobytes would be about 2,000 words. The first 10,000 bytes of my story is 1,900 words.

I'm not sure how this translates to computer bytes (or Kbytes), but most chapters should be about 10 to 20 pages long and contain a complete thought or action. A page would normally be about 80 lines of 64 characters and spaces.

I'd go with the suggestions mentioned above. They should definitely work.
