The prospect of all-female conception
The prospect of all-female conception

Women might soon be able to produce sperm in a development that could allow lesbian couples to have their own biological daughters, according to a pioneering study published today.
Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman's bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue.
The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken from men. They believe the findings show that it may be possible to restore fertility to men who cannot naturally produce their own sperm.
But the results also raise the prospect of being able to take bone-marrow tissue from women and coaxing the stem cells within the female tissue to develop into sperm cells, said Professor Karim Nayernia of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Creating sperm from women would mean they would only be able to produce daughters because the Y chromosome of male sperm would still be needed to produce sons. The latest research brings the prospect of female-only conception a step closer.

A PIPE DREAM.
The nature of separation of sexes varies from species to species.
For humans, Cloning only works with fertilized egg cells. Even if you clone a female, you still must start with removing the genetic material from a fertilized egg before it divides the first time.

A-1, I have heard that about cloning but I think this isn't cloning as we normally think of it. They are talking about making actual female sperm from stem cells of bone marrow. If that turns out to be possible, then the fertilization of the egg would happen in the same way as normally does....... minus the penis of course

Re: The prospect of all-female conception
And I'm sure it's completely theoretically possible. However, like cloning, we're one hell of a long way from doing it on Humans.
Hell, even assuming they coax something sperm-like out of the stem cells, and all tests show it's a sperm, we have no idea what the effect would be. If they screw up even one gene, there's the potential for hellish complications.
So guys, I wouldn't worry about being phased out just yet. Even assuming permission is given for human experimentation, we're likely decades away from seeing it done in reality. And that's assuming a massive research project starts now.

Of course there is a secret government lab churning out and burning up nightmare creations all the time.
It's run by Elvis, Marylin, and JFK at Area 51 with help from aliens.

Nuts! Reproductively speaking, one of my fondest dreams is to be phased out. --FLO--

You forgot Hitler. I thought he was frozen in 1945 and thawed out last year and or living with JFK in Cuba or was that Bat Boy? No, wait its Big Foot I think? He was the father of some woman's baby when he attacked a Texas town last year. Don't they have a house together on one of Satern's Moons that has large cities full of people from Atlantis?
So, when all men are snuffed out and there is only this lesbian female only planet who protect the button to the doomsday device when world wide PMS rules???

Two different types of cell division exist, meoisis and mytosis. In mytosis the cells produce daughter cells with the same number of cromosomes as the mother cells.
In meoisis the daughter cells only have HALF of the chromosomes that the parent cell has.
Males are XY. Females are XX.
If you get your father's "Y", you are a genetic male. If you get your father's "X", you are a genetic female.
That is, unless something goes wrong with the system.
Look Here... (http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/ba ... itosis.swf)
The problem is that without the chemicals procuced by the male sperm the egg will not implant in the uterine wall. On the other hand, without the female chemistry, parts of the the embryo will not develop, only a placenta develops.
...gotta have both...
