Time for Vista?
I have a 5 year old XP system that has become rather crash-prone. I installed a new hard drive a few months back, which seemed to appease the Windows gods for a while, then, without warning, it crashed again. (System registry files corrupted or some damn thing
) Nobody (including Microsoft) can seem to explain exactly why it happens. Anyway, I'm tired of re-installing my OS (and everything else) over and over again, so I'm thinking maybe it's time to retire the old bugger and get a new system. I'd appreciate any input from you folks that have already taken the plunge and gotten a new Vista system. Is it worth my while, or is it just a version of Windows with more stuff to go wrong?

Re: Time for Vista?
I have been using it for about 2 weeks now, only the trial version though.
Anyway, its very nicely set out with some really nice enhancements to it.
BUT, I have found it to be slow and a bit faffy sometimes, plus my motherboard don't like it and I can only load it, if the Vista DVD is in the drive. It also has driver issues with some of my hardware and most programs don't work with it.
After saying all that, If I could find a decent crack for it, I would leave it on, but if I don't, then once the the trial runs out I will be going back to xp

Re: Time for Vista?
You haved a choice - and one that I will make later this year as my system is about the same age as your but it hasn't crashed...
You have the choice to buy a Macintosh at twice the price and not suffer crashes. Oo you can buy a PC at helf to one third the cost with VISTA. You might have to upgrade software, but it will still be cheaper than the Mac.
That's the choice.
BTW - I have no experience with Linux so don't ask. It's not on my radar.

Are you using a late-model machine with a Vista upgrade, or are you using an older system? I'd never dream of trying to put Vista on this thing. My experience with XP is that when it fails, it fails BIG, and with no warning. My hopes are that Vista's a little less failure prone, or that it has better safety nets than XP's System Restore Points (which completely disappear if something mysteriously pisses off your system's registry).

Yeah, I've considered Mac. But, as you said, they are pricey. That's why I was hoping to hear good things about Vista's reliability.

Re: Time for Vista?
A few points -
If you're getting registry failures, try getting Error Doctor. It's made by Lavasoft, the same people who do Ad-Aware se. Error Doctor scans your registry for errors and corrects them. It costs about $20 for a year, but worth it. I used it on my six year old machine, and found over 700 registry errors!
You should only consider Vista on a new machine, where Vista comes pre-loaded, and the machine is certified compatible. Also, you'll need 2 GB of memory for all features of Vista Premium to work properly. Not worth it, otherwise. Some people will confuse you by saying Vista will work with less, but that would be with limited performance. Finally, it's worth spending for a fast processor to get peak performance. You'll usually have several models of processor to choose among, and getting the best will benefit you for years to come. Applications only get more complex over time, so buy something that will last a few years, at least.
I'm waiting for my new computer to arrive - the motherboard is failing on my old machine. I took the opportunity to get an all new system - monitor, printer, mouse, etc. XP works fine, but if you're buying new, position yourself for the future with Vista Premium.

Re: Time for Vista?
Stewie-
If you're going to install Vista to try to solve issues with system instability (crash prone) I wouldn't. I have it on a new machine and am having nothing but problems with it.
I have a laser printer that I purchased two weeks before I purchased my new laptop with vista on it and only recently got the printer to work with the operating system. I also had to find a new driver for my bluetooth adaptor. If you're considering a switch to Vista, wait until it's been in the field long enough for M-$oft to get it fixed.
Then again, if you wait for that you'll likely die waiting... *shrugs*

Re: Time for Vista?
I work for a communications company.. I've been discussing this with a bunch of my co-workers, both from the call center as well as the tech support guys.. The popular vote so far is that anyone looking to get Vista should wait a while for Microsoft to work out the bugs. There's most likely going to be upgrades/updates/patches and the sort.. Might as well wait.

Re: Time for Vista?
Thanks, eveybody, for your advice. It gives me something to work with. I have purchased Registry Repair from StompSoft. Not sure if it's as good as Error Doctor or not. It did find errors, and allegedly correct them, but didn't keep my system from crapping out again (and again...) I wouldn't try Vista without it being part of a new system. As for MS fixing the initial Vista bugs, well, they've had plenty of patches for XP since the beginning, and they never quite got that right. My hope was that they'd learned enough from their mistakes to create a more stable platform. Frankly, if my XP system would just stop crashing, I'd be perfectly happy with it for a long time to come. All the new whiz-bang features of Vista are all well and good, but I don't really need them. I just want a machine that I can depend on. I keep searching for answers to how to keep this thing going, or at least how to fix crashes without losing every damn thing. Lots of answers out there, just no real solutions (so far). One more big crash, and I'm off to the office supply store...

Re: Time for Vista?
As far as I'm concerned, if you're using XP, it's almost a requirement to reformat at least once a year, possibly twice.
Vista? Give it at least 6 more months before you switch to it. Especially if you're considering going 64-bit. Although, on the plus side, I've been running it for a couple months now and I can count the total system crashes on one hand. I have to reboot every few days because something's f'd up, but few spontaneous reboots.
