While I havent actually seen the book yet (my copy is on order) and it probably doesnt even once mention eunuchs, the reviews that Ive read seem to indicate that it would be of interest to many who are here. It sounds as if the entire book could have been written as a response to the thread Does a woman need an eunuch? (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showthr ... #post70788), started by Penpal.
Joan Sewell, whom one reviewer titled the Lucy Ricardo of low libido has written a popular book on the frequent mismatch between male and female libido. Her book is titled, I'd Rather Eat Chocolate: Learning to Love My Low Libido (http://www.amazon.com/Id-Rather-Eat-Cho ... F8&s=books). The publishers review includes the quote,
If I had a choice between having sex and reading a good book, the book wins. I notice I put in the adjective goodand that leaves me wondering if Im not trying to put a better face on things. I still want people to read this and think, Well, of course. If its a good book. But my boyfriendthe man I would eventually marrywould take even bad sex over a good book.
The EIGHT PAGE, highly positive, major review of the book by Sandra Tsing Loh in this months issue of The Atlantic includes the additional quote,
No one is trying to lower mens sex drives. I dont hear, Doctor, my sex drive is too high. Please, do something about it. I feel guilty and ashamed that I dont want less sex. Its killing my marriage.
On the Amazon site, linked above, there are several brief reviews by both men and women. The women wrote highly positive reviews, such as
Joan asks what if men were considered the ones with too high of a sex drive. She comes up with her own fake Oprah show in one chapter where guys are the ones begging for help to lower their drives or face divorce. That made me laugh out loud--if only it were true!
And
Joan Sewell's memoir, "I'd Rather Eat Chocolate" could not be more timely: Redbook magazine just printed a survey stating that 70 percent of women would choose chocolate over sex. The author finds herself squarely in that camp. It's not that she has no libido (she masturbates) or can't orgasm through intercourse, etc. Her husband has skills, but sex is such a low priority that if left up to her, she'd never get around to initiating it with an actual partner. Like me, she fakes lust until she can't fake it anymore.
The two reviews written by men are highly negative with comments such as
And since high quality kids can be obtained from a sperm bank, the book seems to imply the purpose of marriage is to legally bind men to funding women's life style.
At the very least, the book ought to spark several of our authors here into producing short stories on a theme by Joan Sewell.
