Some Best Eunuch Books Selected

Post by Sac_mec (imported) »

Alot of us will have read and enjoyed 'Cry To Heaven' enormously, written by Anne Rice. It is a novel set in 18th century Italy where Castrati still sang Choral works. It is a first class read at so many levels; it is essential reading, thoroughly recommended - all the more so to ex choirboys :)

Reflecting upon it, I know that in the recent past that a new Eunuch novel published by a mainstream publisher was written of here, but I neither remember the books title or the author. If you know of this novel, or indeed of any other really compelling published novels which feature a Eunuch interest, please make more of us aware of these books.

Of course the EA is itself a source of lots of Eunuch stories, but the idea I'm thinking of in this thread is to make aware more widely your recommendations of novels available from bookstores from renowned authors and publishers; any recommendations??

You might want to read 'Porporino, or The Secrets of Naples' by Dominique Fernandez. There is also a short book along the same lines by Kingsley Amis but I can't find my copy or recall the title. --FLO--

The novel by Kingsley Amis is "The Alteration". Not one of his best, but an impressive anti-Catholic screed centered around the castration of a choir boy.

I didn't care much for that novel -- too damn wordy; it was kind of dull and tiresome.

Hmm.. I'll have to check out that Anne Rice book, I havn't read any books of hers except for a vampire one back when I was 15.

Also Killing Time by Thomas Berger is an excellent novel. The murderer in this book has a very serious interest in obtaining a penectomy, though not a central theme in the book, really just one of the many quirks of a very uniquely odd (and actually quite likable) character.

The "Fraj" gives a good post about "The Wasp Factory" by Iain Banks.

"Cry to Heaven" stretches things a bit, but is still a good read.

Another is "River God" by Wilbur Smith. Not much on castration, per say, one scene, but the hero is a eunuch and it IS a good book.

I suppose that one might add "As I lay Dying" by William Faulkner. As I recall it, the principal character is a severely retarded eunuch who had been castrated (in the preceding novel, of which I can't remember the title) to control his sexuality.

The story is told in stream-of-consciousness style and deals with his reactions to his loss. 😭

There was a poster some time back, I believe name was Karlescu (?), from UK, who posted a substantial amount of stuff about books, articles, etc. on topic of castration, fiction, non-fiction, etc. Have I got name right? Anyone find a link? Or perhaps we lost his/her stuff in the crashes last year...

I think that the thread Kristoff is referrring to is Castration in fiction books ( http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=158). It’s a long thread with 113 posts to date.

There are also, of course, a number of reviews and book notes on the Non-Fiction Articles board here. More reviews are solicited! If there's a book that you've enjoyed, please write up a brief note on it.

There was a movie available on video called The Ladies Club. It was about a group of women, one of them was a surgeon, and they captured a rapist who had been let go by the courts. They turned him over to the woman surgeon who castrated him.

It said the movie was based on the novel The Sisterhood which was written by two ladies whose last names I think were Bishop and Black.

I have tried and tried to find a copy of the novel The Sisterhood that the movie The Ladies Club was based on, but I've never been able to find a copy of The Sisterhood. Does anyone know anything about the novel?
