importance of taking calcium

Post by newlife (imported) »

Hello all. Could someone explain to me the importance of taking a daily amount of calcium supplements after being castrated. out of ignorance for 2 weeks i didn't take any calcium tablets which was in early august 06. will this have serious consequences on my body. also will skipping days have negative consequences. Also i have noticed since my surgery my lower back to butt muscle or butt bone aches horrible when i sit down for more than 30 minutes. did anyone else have a similiar experience and know what is the cause of this constant pain? Thanks in advance

Testosterone helps calcium bond into the bones. When I started with depo-provera my doctor gave me a bone-density scan as a baseline and I will get yearly ones to see if the bones get less dense. Per my doctor's advice, I take four 320mg calcium pills, each with 200 units of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium.

Yet another reason to be under a doctor's care.

Hope this helps,

Don

Missing a day here or there is not going to cause any harm. Neither is a couple of weeks. Just try to maintain a regular regimen of vitamins and minerals. I take a calcium supplement along with vitamin D, Magnesium, and Zinc, as well as a multi. The principal concern is prevention of bone mass loss - osteoporosis. Bone scans and preventive care are well advised.

How about Vitamin K? Wouldn't be important to take a Vitamin K supplement as it's supposed to be important to osteogenesis and calcium absorption?

Having osteoporosis is no fun. It is very common in older females. As a guy ages his chances increase. When I started taking my androcur (chemical castration) I also started taking calcium tablets as well. The lack or great reduction of male or female hormones affects the bones. It is often stated that an eunuch is much like a female when it comes to bones. 1000 to 1500 mg of calcium is recommended as well as vitamin D. I developed osteoporosis even with the extra calcium. My blood levels of calcium were normal.

Anyone that is an eunuch and not on some type of hormone replacement therapy should get a bone density scan done. Getting a base line is very important. That is what I was trying to do and found out in time to take corrective action. Missing a few doses is not anything to worry about.

Here is a link that has good information on osteoporosis from the government.

A couple of older threads looking at osteoporosis are Osteoporosis for All (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=4076) and Consider Osteoporosis (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=3460).
