I learned something new, and scarily relevant about a great man I deeply respect today, Alan Turing. He was homosexual apparantly, like, totally flaming gay. And at the time (1952), the USA actually prosecuted him for being gay, and forced him to take estrogen injections to "reduce his libido". He ended up committing suicide shortly thereafter, and I don't doubt it was partially due to the effects of screwing up his hormones like I'd like to do:

Besides the fact that the USA is a terrible, horrible place thanks to the 50's, another lesson to learn is take your hormones with care, and avoid getting too enamored of stupid rich white girls who eat poisoned apples.

Re: Alan Turing
Very interesting and thoughtful story. Only one thing ... Section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1885 is a UK law, not a US one.

That is not surprising, because Alan Turing lived and died in the UK. He was the genius behind the breaking of the enigma code at Bletchley Manor. This was a major factor in helping to win WWII.
It is unlikely that the U.S. had any direct influence on they way in which he was treated, other than sheer spy hysteria and the fact that this was the height of the cold war. It was about this time when the Krugers stole the secrets of the Atomic Bomb and passed them on to Russia. They lived and worked in the UK so the Americans put a lot of pressure on the British Secret Service. The bungalow in which they lived still exists and is about 2 miles away from here.

Re: Alan Turing
Thanks. -.- I swear I looked far and wide and couldn't find his country of residence. Typically in such cases it's ignorant USA citizens assuming they're the center of the universe again. In this case though, I was just not paying close enough attention.
