Re: More on Master Rick's Castration Service...
Just as a little extra info, Dr. Paul Appelbaum, who contributed the comment: "The people who I have seen who have undergone voluntary castration have been psychotic and often in the grip of a delusion that their sexual organs were causing them to behave in evil ways,"
Can be contacted at :

Phone: 212-543-4184
Fax: 212-543-6752

I urge people to write, unless they are happy accepting the label "psychotic". Calling into question our state of mind in this manner not only helps push us further from the margins of society, it also helps justify the medical communities reluctance to deal with this issue. I have already expressed my view to him that I find this broad and sweeping (and unfair?) statment on our community to be "abbhorent". Please be kind and courteous (as I know everyone in our community is), but know that we cannot accept this label under any circumstances.

To provide a very MINIMAL defense of Dr. Appelbaum, most of the voluntary eunuchs who appear in the medical litereature are those who botched attempts at self castration most of whom do appear to have been either psychotic or very drunk (and probably both) at the time. The second most frequent are those who arrive in emergency rooms through botched castrations by cutters.
The medical literature, in MANY places, claims that there is about one voluntary castration per year in the United States.
Dr. Appelbaum has probably never run into anyone like the majority of those on the Archive. Write polite, but informative, notes to him. He is frequently quoted.

Yes, sorry if the last post sounded a little harsh... certainly wasn't said with any degree of malice, and I suppose he did say
But my thoughts are: that gay people are no more or less psychotic than straight people. Suppose we allowed the old view that gay people were sick, or in someway defective and belonged in hospital (as things might have been not so long ago). I wonder what todays society would look like for the gay community if they had stood by and done nothing?
Who would be next for the 'psychotic' label to undermine their right to exist?
That is all I was trying to get across
