They replaced lumber and shingles.

Consuela and Maria, my house servants, were worried about asbestos coming from an open hole to my roof. Firemen had accidently broken it while looking for smoke.

My crawl space between roof and ceiling, is filled with asbestos for insulation but, access to it is via a closet which is usually closed.

I reassured them that one week of minute exposure isn't bad. It normally takes years of continued exposure to get sick from it. I worked in an asbestos plant a decade ago as a lowly rent-a-cop.

might want to get another look. more likely it is rock wool. lots of folks mistake that for asbestos. asbestos was rarely used in houses for attic insulation, but was frequently used on pipes.

Rock wool or fiberglass is the most common housing insulation and is typically what you find in attics and between walls; for a while some used what is essentially fire-proofed paper pulp, but that was blown in insulation.

Asbestos was used as a wrapping around heat-bearing pipes or shielding on hot surfaces like furnaces, heaters, or brake linings. Industrial asbestos comes in two forms, fibrous, which was woven into asbestos cloth (used for suits, mats, and gloves) and solid asbestos, which is a compressed board rather like a greyish masonite; that stuff was typically used, not as insulation but for clapboards (shingle-like siding on the outside of the house).

Judging from the age of your house, I do not think you have any fiberglass in the attic. Unless it you added some insulation in the past 30 years. Fiberglass is a light in weight. Will have a very airy construction. Would also be in strips about 15 inches wide. Could also be attached to a paper backing.

You would have the old type. Would be sort of clumpy. Sort of dense. Would be lower then the floor's 2x6's. Either would have a minimal heath risks. The dust in the insulation would be very high. Working with the insulation will stir up the dust.

Ask Time Warner for a credit for all the time you were not on.

Next outage you should be asking for a female repair person. May make the repair more interesting and enjoyable.
