Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
Yesterday, September 22, was the third anniversary of my surgical castration. For 18 months prior to surgery I was on drugs to lower my testosterone levels as part of my treatment for prostate cancer.
Since my castration, I have not been on hormonal drugs of any kind.
I do continue to have "hot flushes" (as we call them in England). I sweat profusely for about ten minutes then the flush will pass and I am OK again.
I have come to the conclusion that the hot flushes are, in part, psychological. They seem to come mainly when I am sitting quietly, for instance, as now when I am sitting in front of my computer screen. If my mind is occupied as, for instance, if I am at a party or taking part in a meeting, I am not troubled by any hot flushes.
Otherwise, I can report that I am very well and l have no regrets at all about living without testostereone. For the record, on October 3 I shall turn 76. For those who know about these things, my blood PSA level is consistently below 0.1.

Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
Glad to hear your story. I have so far, and plan to continue to avoid HRT. Your successes encourage me. Thank you for posting. By the way, October 3rd is the day my Social Security retirement benefits are to start. So we both have something to celebrate.TerryUK (imported) wrote: Sun Sep 24, 2006 3:21 am Yesterday, September 22, was the third anniversary of my surgical castration. Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
For this Eunuch, the weather has been simply wonderful. Walking to work in the light rain keeps me cool, especially if I walk fast in order to raise the heart rate.
My hot flash episodes seem to be a thing of the past. Every once in a while a 'flash' will appear but not many in the cool weather. Compared to the summer months, hot flashes were my buddy. Always at my side, they were not shy.
The mind is doing well. My visit with family and friends at the last MOM's event helped tremendously. Mind altering states are held in check and life is grand.
A realization in the last 4 months has me doing things that brought me joy prior to total loss of testosterone. My interests included theatre arts (stage, walk-in, DVD), outings (parks, campouts, social events), landscaping (yard and garden), and home improvements. After successful adventures outdoors and a few projects around the house my attitude toward life returned, it's now a "love of life."
Now aint life grand?...

Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
The previous posts are very interesting reading. I feel very reassured that there is life after castration!
When I get the surgery, I plan to stay off of HRT as I am seeking relief form an overactive sex drive.

AHHHHH you will get the relief from the sex drive however there are other issues to think over before jumping into eunuchism. First off is matabolism.metabolic syndrome kicks in rather quickly as I became rather chubby around the mid section after about a year.everything slows down.second would be ostoperosis.third would be the hot flashes which WILL stop you in your tracks while you try to cool off.Next would be the cognitive issues,I became less sharp than before.Last would be the thing that I hate the most. That is wanting to have ocassional sex with my wife and not being able to even with testosterone therapy. I have no sex drive and couldn't penetrate a bowl of jello on a good day.
Oh but don't get me wrong,If you want to be asexual thats great just remember theres no going back once your one of us. (TWIN)

Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
Just another update on the "heating" issue.
This week two estimates were received for a new HVAC system, no not High-voltage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-voltage)alternating current (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternating_current), for my house. Both came in close to each other, only about a $1,000 difference. I live in a modest home, not overly grandeur, just right. The first company quoted two prices, high quality at $6,100 and standard at $5,100. The second company quoted two as well: $7,100 and $6,100 respectively.
I don't know about you but these prices are much more than I thought reasonable. My castration procedures total cost were in the range of $5,000 max. With my overheating condition, I might not need a new heating system in the house. A few sweatshirts and a good overcoat should do me fine.
In the summer I have given the thought to an above ground swimming pool. If it gets too hot, then take a dunk.
Why spend that kind of money on a fixed system for the house when I can buy a portable system for the back yard?...

Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
One thing you may want to SERIOUSLY consider if you do the air conditioning approach is to be sure to consider the efficiency rating of the system. You will pay more initially for a more efficient system, but the total life cycle cost (meaning the monthly utility bills) could well be much lower. Air cond. systems are not cheap, but you get what you pay for, assuming that you are dealing with reputable dealers.

My current system is a Bryant-90 with a/c included. The system also has an April-air humidifier and a Honeywell electro-static air filter.
I am looking to replace the funace and a/c if needed. Now the system works well but since its getting older, much like Uncle Flo (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/member.php?u=11192) and MacWolfie (http://www.eunuch.org/vbulletin/member.php?u=11603), thinking about newer systems is a good thing.

So, I'm already being replaced? --FLO--

Re: Overheating: Life as a Eunuch
Robby--
Considering that you probably only need AC in July and August in Minnesota, that sounds like a big expense. If your current system is marginal, a one-room unit for the bedroom might provide whatever additional cooling is necessary. Of course, a marginal unit is usually one that is wearing out, so you'll probably have to replace the main system eventually anyway.
Another possibility, if you don't need to have any work done on the ducting, is to do some research and find out what kind of system you need, then see if you can buy the system from one place and have somebody else who knows what he's doing install it as an independent contractor. With air conditioning, plumbing, and some other home services, the people who do an all-in-one job have their prices set at a relatively high level, because there isn't a lot of competition in a specific geographical area, and people will pay more because they think they're paying to get the job done right. The hourly rates they bill are sometimes incredible. Somebody who does installation independently will often do a better job than a regular installation crew, but of course you have to be careful and make sure the independent is reliable.
