Depo and anti-depressants
Hi all.
I've recently separated from my significant other of 3 years and, in addition to a constant depo dosage, am experiencing some depression. I am considering taking prozac or some anti-depressant in order to curb this depression for a short time, just so I can function enough to go on with daily routines.
Anyone know of any side effects or cautions when combining depo with anti-depressants?
thanks!

When I first started on anti-depressents I was on Depo-Provera and there was no problem. Go to www.crazymeds.org (http://www.crazymeds.org) to find out more. Prozac & Paxil will really kill the sex drive too. If your goal is to be chemically castrated most anti-depressents will be more then happy to help you out in that department!

Re: Depo and anti-depressants
I have been on Androcur for 2 years and at the same time Zoloft. The Zoloft makes me sleep more but I don't think it effects my sexual drive at all. Yes, it did effect my sex drive at the beginning but once your body adjusts it doesn't. I can't imagine living without the Zoloft now. It really does make a difference in my life. Before I had sharp mood swings regularly. Those are pretty much a thing of the past now. Don't be afraid to talk to you Doctor or counselor if you are having issues. An antidepressant can make a big difference in your life.

Re: Depo and anti-depressants
The Depression issue puts me in quite a quandry, folks.
After discussing Depression with a couple of people here (Andrew being one of them) I decided to postpone surgical castration for awhile and explore chemical castration.
Now I see that Depression appears to be "in the cards", no matter which route is taken. Okay. Fine. It looks as though anti-depressants will be unavoidable. It's not appealing, but sometimes the Right Move in life carries a price.
My question is: Are anti-depressants a non-negotiable, lifetime med, like insulin? Can someone be on them for a time, but eventually wean off- this time, under medical supervision?
Years ago, I was put on decipramine <sp>. The side effects were so diagreeable that I tapered myself off of them. Evidently, doing this by yourself isn't a good idea. Still, nothing untoward happened.
Perhaps the "pink cloud" emotional lift of having stopped drinking at the same time carried me thru. btw- 8 Sept/2005 was my 17th Sober Anniversary.
To me, my depression isn't severe. It's better characterised as a long-term, but mild "brownout". It's noticeable but less disagreeable than were the meds. I can live with it.
I know that no one here can dispense medical advice, but some thoughts on the issue would be most welcome.

Re: Depo and anti-depressants
While I have been on the Chemical Castration drug Androcur for two years. I have yet to bite the bullet and get castrated yet. I have been on the anti-depressant Zoloft for 1 1/2 years. I should have been on Zoloft all my life. My BF wants me to eventually try living without the Zoloft. I do not have prescription drug insurance so I get my Zoloft from Masters Marketing also. It is costing me about $1 per day for my Zoloft. Far cheaper than a pack of cigs. I know that my life really changed in the last two years. I have mellowed in ways I never thought possible.
Re: Depo and anti-depressants
There is proof that there are simple things to help with depression, in addition to medication:
Chocolate (dark - the expensive kind!)
Pets (puppies are best)
Little kids (boys - age 3-10 work best)
See, the kid will get into the candy, get wound up, and then chase the puppy, which requires YOU to chase after the both of them. Then you won't have time to think about being depressed.

I took Zoloft for about two years and then stopped taking it. I'm doing fine now (opposing opinions are welcome!). -FLO-

Yes, in fact with most psychiatrists the goal is to get you stabilized for a period of time like 2-3 years and then start to slowly wean you off of them.
