Pasting messages from offline

Post by An Onymus (imported) »

If I recall correctly, someone mentioned a while ago, that it is possible to write posts offline using a word processor (e.g. Wordpad) and then paste them into the message typing box, so that the posting can be made. I don't see any obvious way to do that, so could someone explain in simple terms how it is done, if it can be accomplished. I have in the past had several messages go down the cyberhole before I could get them posted.

This reply was created with Notepad.

(Use Notepad since vBulletin does not handle text formating from MSWord or any other Windows word processor. Notepad contains no formatting.)

1. I opened Notepad.

2. I typed what I want to say.

3. I saved the document in Notepad.

4. I went to E. A. and found the thread I wanted to post in.

5. I copied the contents of the saved Notepad document.

6. I pasted into the input window for the reply.

7. I submitted my post.

8. I closed the Notepad document.

9. I smiled as my post made it to E. A. successfully.

10. I ate a bowl of ice cream in celebration...

Sure, you can copy and paste easily enough, but I find that Word Pad and Office 03 don't play nice with the text formatting of VBulletin.

Write your reply in the word proccessor of your choice. In the edit field go down the list and hit "select all" (this will highlight all of your work). Then go back to the edit field again and hit "copy". You now have your message in querry ready to paste. Find your thread and open the repy box. Left click in the reply field to set the cursor, then right click and select "paste". You now have your message pasted into the reply thread. Add any changes you might need and hit the submit button.

Viola! Your done.

I would add that I always hit the <Preview Post> button first so that I can see what the post will look like before submitting it. I use Microsoft Word, my standard word processor, and add in any HTML codes for exotic types of text that I want to produce:

[ b ] at the beginning of text that I want to appear in bold face (without the spaces inside the square brackets, which are here to keep it from making this text bold face),

[ /b ] to close the bold face.

(ALL tags require both the open and close, or they don't work!!! The close tag is the same as the open tag, but with the slash added.

"" gives italic

"" gives underline

"[center]" centers the text

"" to give red text (or list blue, green, etc.)

The close tag for any color just requires /color.

There are many other useful tags to change font and size, etc. that you will eventually find useful.

This is somewhat simpler than the procedure required the last time I transferred text from one word processor to another (as opposed to transfers from one document to another in a specific word processor). If I recall correctly (It was a while ago--might have been with a green screen) I had to press one of the function keys down while highlighting the text to be pasted. The word processor I pasted to could have been WordStar, but I don't actually remember.

Copying and pasting is not brain surgery.

Whatever you copy stays on your PC clipboard until you copy or cut something else to replace it, or turn the PC off.

Somewhere in the toolbar of the word cruncher you use, you should see EDIT. Under that will be SELECT ALL. Then it's back to EDIT and COPY.

Right click once in the reply box here you chose, and hit PASTE from the menu that comes up. Preview the post and edit as needed.

I prefer to use the keyboard so I use Control-A to select all, Control-C to copy and Control-V to paste.

I frequently do this. I type the message on Word. I run spell and grammar check. Then, I simply copy or cut and transfer to the Archive. This helps me make fewer mistakes. It does not eliminate mistakes.

Like you, I have lost some posts. I think that the trick is to have both the Archive and Word open at the same time. When I had one or the other closed, I have lost material.
