Some members of the Archive community saw the letter that I sent to my local newspaper. I'm pleased to say that it was published in the San Francisco Chronicle:

Editor:

Let the fireworks begin! I expect a long and rancorous debate after the bombings in London. Would Moslem terrorists have set off the coordinated attacks if Britain had not joined with the U.S. in Iraq? Did the invasion of Iraq recruit more terrorists who have now taken retaliatory action? Will the U.S. be next?

The biggest question, though, is whether or not we will really be “the land of the brave” and move forward, or will we cower in fear and further curtail our civil liberties in a futile search for personal safety?

i dont think the UK joining the USA in the war in Iraq had anything to do with it the people who did it were born here in the uk, and it now turns out went to pakistan for training.

they would i think have carried out the bombing no matter what, its just the war in Iraq is a good excuse, to bomb the west. the hate the west that mutch, but dont mind taking there money.

Below is a letter to the editor published in this morning's San Francisco Chronicle that I wish I had written. It's succinct and to the point. They won't publish another of mine for at least a month (though I'm a local curmudgeon who does get one in about every two months).

Editor:

According to President Bush, the terrorists attack us because they hate our freedom.

Well, that explains why he is allowing the religious right to take over the government, why he pushed for an expansion of the Patriot Act and why his administration has consistently ignored the Bill of rights.

By taking away our civil liberties, he eliminates the primary cause of terrorism: our freedom.

"Liberal Anarchist" is an oxymoron, bucko, and the Patriot Act has, for the most part, not been used to prosecute suspected terrorists. It has mostly been used exactly as the "liberal anarchists" have feared it would be: to destroy the constitutional rights of American citizens. The loosening of federal restrictions on wiretapping has been the most-abused portion, with local police departments using it (illegally) to attempt to gather evidence against small-time drug dealers. Whether or not you think that's a worthwhile cause (which, for the record, I don't - confusing the terrorism issue even further only undermines the genuine efforts to eradicate it), it's certainly not being used for the purpose it was intended (much like the Endangered Species Act, the primary beneficiary of which has been Wal-Mart, not endangered species), and should therefore be revoked or seriously altered.
