Fine, absolutely FINE, writing by Nathan with factual commentary that is both thought-provoking and disturbing. This comes before the fictional story, but both are very well worth the read. In reading this tale, one cannot help but wonder if we are really as civilized as we think we are - and what may be things to come.

I agree wholeheartedly and I sincerely thank Nathan for writing and publishing it.

But as I read it I could not help thinking of H. L. Mencken's observation that for every complex problem there is a simple, straightforward solution that is wrong. Our judicial system, though very good, is not fault-free. Just one example is that technological advances in the past few years have allowed more than 100 convicted felons to prove that they were in fact NOT guilty of the offenses of which they were convicted, and they have regained their freedom. This makes me very reluctant to advocate punishments that are not reversible.

Assuming that the technological problems of manufacturing and installing the squibs and triggering them always and only when the rules specify are solved (as they surely will be, given sufficient time and incentive), what about the sociological problems? Are tops always tops and bottoms always bottoms? Is it not possible that a convict whose proximity setting is six inches or more may be raped by one whose setting is still zero because he has not yet been caught (in prison)? Who then is nutted? Who should be?
