Man Mutilated in Sex Attack Years Ago Dies

TACOMA, Wash. -- A man who was mutilated and left for dead as a boy, an attack that led to the nation's first law allowing indefinite confinement of sexual predators, has died in a motorcycle wreck at age 23.
Ryan Alan Hade, of Roy, died June 9 when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck near Yelm.
Hade was the victim of a grisly attack in 1989 that made national headlines. A convicted sex offender, Earl Kenneth Shriner, was sentenced to 131 years in prison for ambushing and raping the 7-year-old, cutting off his penis, stabbing him and leaving him for dead in a Tacoma park.
Legislators cited the case in adopting the nation's first state law to allow indefinite civil confinement of sexual predators, noting that Shriner had a 25-year history of perversion and violence against young people.
Hade enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding and skydiving and recently got a flying lesson from a cousin while visiting Illinois.
"He survived something that was extreme and consequently he lived his life extreme," his mother, Helen Harlow, said. "You cheat death once, you figure you can cheat it just about any time you want."
Surgery to reconstruct his penis succeeded and her son was able to lead a full life, Harlow had said. She became a crusader for laws to protect the public against predators.
Now 55, Shriner remains in prison.
Ed. Note - this is a copy of the article. It didn't say how he crashed the bike, why, or give any details of the reconstruction process of his penis. - Paolo

most child preditors don't do especially well in prison. especially ones guilty of maiming a young boy for life. things have a way of accidently becoming disconnected in the shower there. lets all hope....

I remember that story. But the information of what he did to the child was never told in the stories in the paper.

Re: From AP News
Living in Portland I read the story at the time. There was surprise at the time that the little boy didn't bleed to death. As I recall he was found walking naked along the road. His mother said at the time they would persue reconstructive surgery when he was older. She changed her mind later and had the surgery when he was still quite young saying that she didn't want him to be made fun of at school (gym class, etc). Evidently there was enough of the penile structure internally that surgeons were able to build a reasonable member for him.

I remember this as well. Not just for the horror of it, but becasue it reminded me a lot of something my late uncle would talk about after a having a few too many snorts of hard stuff. After getting pretty banged up at Guadalcanal during WWII, the Marines assigned him stateside as a guard at a base on the West Coast. On patrol one night he came across a civilian automobile some place it shouldn't have been. On searching the car, he found the body of a young boy in the trunk. The boy had suffered the same horrible abuse as Alan Hade, but did not survive. The perp had apparently planned to dispose of the body in the isolated part of the base where my Uncle found him. My Uncle decided to hold him at the base brig over night, and turn him over to civilian law enforcement in the morning. Sadly, the perp didn't survive the night. In a freak accident during an apprent escape attempt, he wound up being dragged to death behind a JEEP. To this day I'm not sure how much of what happened to the perp was "accidental". Even a few decades after the event, my Uncle got real choked up and then angry talking about the little boy he found in the trunk. I think that tore him up more than what he experienced in combat.
