Re: Spiro vs. Androcur
Bore me with reports? Not hardly! This is the kind of stuff I love to learn, but have trouble finding. So tell me, how did you quit? I'm thinking cold turkey will be hardest, but best. Patches still pump you full of nicotine which is counterproductive. People may just have to deal with me being the queen bitch from hell for a couple weeks until the cravings subside. I mean, not only does smoking reduce the effectiveness of the estrogen, but I also understand there's a huge increase in the possibilty of blood clots. That would be so not good. I only have two cigarettes left right now so I guess this is as good a time as any. Wish me luck!

Re: Spiro vs. Androcur
I wish you the best in quitting!
I used the patches to stop the smoking. But the idea was to stop the nicotine addiction. After a while, I would leave the patch on for two days instead of one, and eventually, I noticed that the patch remained on for a whole week without being changed. At that time, I thought that I must be over the nicotine addiction, and that was that.
The step-down approach, using weaker patches every week or so also seems like a good idea.
I hope that you do well!
hugs,
Kelly

Re: Spiro vs. Androcur
What is the reason for taking the 325 mg per day of aspirin, Rowan and Christina? Is it for arthritis?
Also, what do Evanesce and Feminol, the herbal supplements, contain? Do they have phytoestrogens in them, and any natural substitute for spironolactone as an anti-androgen? I would have thought that saw palmetto would be an effective herbal anti-androgen.

It keeps the blood thin and helps to avoid clotting. I also take Evening Primrose Oil to help with this.

Yes, they are 100% phytoesrogen. If it comes from plant matter, it's a phytoestrogen. Evanesce is supposed to be an herbal anti-androgen.

From what I've been told, Saw Palmetto actually metabolizes into a form of testosterone.

Re: Spiro vs. Androcur
I have a question here, soy is a weak estrogen activity thing, but will taking it reduce your sex drive? From what I know, Estrogen and testosterone r seperate things, as in they will not 'cancel' each other out. like if u take estro and testo, u will develope beasts n facial hair, amongst others. m i correct?

Re: Spiro vs. Androcur
The major activity of saw palmetto extract is supposed to be due to its containing natural steroids and/or sterols which block the receptor sites of 5-alpha-reductase or 5-alpha dihydrogenase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone by adding two hydrogens across the double bond between the carbons at the 4 and 5 positions. Dihydrotestosterone is a MUCH more biologically potent molecule, and the one which actually does all the damage in the body. The shape of the steroid/sterol molecules in saw palmetto is like that of testosterone, but with additional functional groups attached which prevent them from having androgenic effects. Sterols have a long hydrocarbon chain at the 17-position, examples being cholesterol (synthesized in animals), stigmasterol (from soybean oil), digitoxigenin (in digitalis), and diosgenin (in Mexican yam). Spironolactone works in a similar way. The same or other steroids/sterols in saw palmetto very probably also block androgen receptor sites on cell walls, and depress gonadotropin production by the pituitary. This is why saw palmetto is used as a herbal supplement in the treatment of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.

Re: Spiro vs. Androcur
Muchas gracias!
