Although I did walk some to get to the airport, the last time I flew I was sitting the entire time.

Seriously though, 2 weeks is a bit excessive. I've understand that a lot o' guys take a week off work. Myself, I was up and walking with a friend to a restaurant several hours afterward. And though it wasn't comfortable, I was back at work and walking with real estate agents in a hunt for a new office 2 days following.

when i had mine done, the cords where cut very high, due to the removal of a large, painful vein.this created a feeling of lose and tight rubber band threw my lower stomach.

every one will be different. i flew, like i said, a few days later.

the topic, "Is Kimmel the best way to go?". i should say he aint the best way to go, yet he gets the job done, if thats all that really matters to a person, then go with him.!.

With very few choices to choose from in the U.S. and if you don't want to go to psychiatrist to prove you need to be castrated, then yes, Kimmel is the best choice or only choice. Dr. Alter does require a letter from a psychiatrist, doesn't he?

Yes, he does and I think (My opinion) a sanity check is required by many surgeons for any "cosmetic" surgery. I was told that this is more common as law suits become more insane. Can I just say that I think this is a good step to do? I know I was a bit embaressed to be asked to do this but once I did (And passed with flying colors - much to my surprise) I was glad I had. I was able to get a true outsiders point of view (He agreed with my motives and considered them rational) and felt better about going (trying) forward.

One other surgeon (And yes, you need to have a sanity check from her) is Dr Bowers in Colorado. She does like a zillion sex change operations a year so she knows how to do an Orchiectomy pretty well.

Dr Alter has the added benifit of being a Urologist AND and cosmetic surgeon so experience and talent he has in large quantity.

These are the big spotlight type surgeons. Any large university hospital can do this. You probably want to talk to a Triage Nurse about what you are seeking first to find out if they ever do such things.

My biggest concern is the recovery time needed after the surgery. From reading the other posts, it looks like there is a wide variation in recovery times. When I had a vasectomy, I was told to stay off my feet for a couple of days, but it was nearly a full week before I got out of bed for more than a few moments. This leads me to beleive that I would have a long and difficult recovery from orchiectomy, especially since I am now 30+ years older now.

Perhaps the problems with recovery after surgery by Dr. Kimmel is that the relatively short resting period in the hotel followed by lengthy travel causes a delay in healing or a chance of infection. This also means that travel to O-R-R or Thailand could be similarly problematical.

Women can go get an hysterectomy without any significant delay or special requirements like psych letters. The girl (in her 20's) that did my bookkeeping many years ago was single and had her tubes tied so she could have sex anytime she wanted without getting pregnant. From what she told me it was no big deal for the doctor to do it despite the fact that she would be permanently sterile afterwards.

Getting a vasectomy was no big deal for me, although my wife did have to give her consent. We had a 5-minute meeting with the doctor and then off I went to have the surgery. 45-minutes later I was on my way home minus about an inch of ductwork.

When my wife developed ovarian cysts, the doctor cheerfully excised all of her internal plumbing except the vagina. I even got to see all the goodies that he had taken out before they were disposed of.

But if I ask a doctor to excise my balls, I get all sorts of weird looks and offers to refer me to a psych.... Talk about a double standard!

Just an update on my seemingly endless back ordeal. I have been trying to get my insurance company to pay for 1 disc replacement and 2 fusions. After 3 appeals, they still said no. I then tried to get them to let me pay for the disc and have them pay for the fusion in the same surgery and again they said no. I'm going to talk to my surgeon about my options, but since I can't afford to pay for the whole surgery I will have to be fused at all 3 levels so the insurance will pay. So much for taking advantage of new, FDA approved, technology. Surgery will hopefully be by the end of July. I'm tired of the pain and the drugs to control it. Sometimes it doesn't pay to get out of bed in the morning.

Here's another update on my back. I am scheduled for surgery on Aug. 22. I'm still not happy that I can't get the surgery I want, but I have an excellent surgeon and he assures me that I will be OK. I'm going to be in the hospital for about 5 days. I will then go home for 2 weeks before my post-op visit. I'll just have to see how the pain levels go while healing. I'll be about 8 weeks until I get to feeling pretty good and then 4-6 months before I start physical therapy. It will take about a year or so to totally heal. After 6 months of getting the runaround from my insurance company, I'm ready to get this over with. I hope all goes as planned and it doesn't get put back again. I know I asked a long time ago, but hopefully this is for real this time. I would appreciate any prayers and good thoughts as this is a very intrusive surgery. They are going in from the front and the back. There goes my pretty tummy. Maybe I can get a bikini cut.

So if I stop posting around the 22nd, you'll know what I'm doing.

My GP said Mederma used 3 or 4 times a day for 6 or 8 weeks will minimize the scar. Just remember when you use those drugs for pain be proactive about laxitives! No laughing without bending forward. And frozen peas on the incision s.
