Installing windows XP

YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP, ARE YOU SURE

YOU WANT TO CONTINUE?

Yes.

ARE YOU REALLY SURE?

Yes.

ARE YOU REALLY REALLY SURE?

YES!

OK, THEN. JUST SO YOU KNOW, WE'RE REQUIRED TO ASK YOU

THAT NOW. IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT FOR BEING A PICKY CONSUMER

AND SUPPORTING THAT WHOLE "ANTI- TRUST" NONSENSE.

INGRATE.

Just get on with it.

ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP. FIRST WE NEED TO

CHECK YOUR SYSTEM FOR COMPATIBILITY. THIS COULD TAKE

SEVERAL DAYS.

Groan.

THE INSTALL PROGRAM HAS DETECTED SEVERAL POSSIBLE

PROBLEMS AND WILL NOT LET YOU INSTALL XP.

Problems? What problems?

THE VIDEO CARD YOU ARE USING APPARENTLY DOES NOT WORK

WITH THE MOTHERBOARD.

But I'm using it at this very moment.

THAT IS IRRELEVANT.

But if the video card isn't working with the mother board then I

can't very well see this warning message telling me that the video

card wasn't...

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FOOL ME WITH LOGIC, I AM A MICROSOFT

PRODUCT. LOGIC DOES NOT WORK ON ME. I HAVE ALSO FOUND

THE FOLLOWING MINOR ERRORS:

WINDOWS XP IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE FOLLOWING

HARDWARE - MONITOR, KEYBOARD, MEMORY CHIPS,

MOTHERBOARD BIOS, WEB CAM, SCANNER, SOUND CARD, USB

CONTROLLER, CD/R DRIVE, MICROPHONE, AND FLIGHT STICK.

All that?

YES. AND THE HARDDRIVE IS RIGHT OUT TOO. WE DON'T LIKE

THE MANUFACTURER.

Well what *DOES* work?

THE MOUSE.

The mouse?

YES. AND THE 5 1/4 DRIVE.

I don't have a 5 1/4 drive.

YES YOU DO.

No I don't.

WHAT'S THAT THEN?

It's a 3 1/2 drive.

NO IT ISN'T.

Yes it is.

YOU'RE NOT THAT SMART YOU KNOW.

Look, can you just install XP on my system and I'll download the

latest drivers for everything later? Please?

WAIT, WHAT DO YOU MEAN *YOUR* SYSTEM?

Well it is mine.

NO IT ISN'T.

It bloody well is.

NUH-UH. YOU SIGNED THE AGREEMENT WHEN YOU OPENED THE

BOX. OUR SYSTEM. IT'S OURS. AND YOU CAN ONLY DO 4

CHANGES BEFORE YOU HAVE TO PAY US MORE MONEY.

But why?

BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THE LICENSE WORKS, IDJIT. WE CAN'T

VERY WELL HAVE PEOPLE PUTTING HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

ON THEIR SYSTEMS ALL HIGGLEDY PIGGLEDY, NOW COULD WE?

YOU USERS WOULD MUCK EVERYTHING UP, AND THEN WHERE

WOULD WE BE? I'LL TELL YOU WHERE, NOWHERE. THAT'S

WHERE. I... HEY, WHAT IS THAT? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? IS THAT

A DISK? WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THAT DISK? YOU'RE NOT

PUTTING IT IN THE DRIVE ARE YOU? YOU ARE! WHAT'S ON THAT

DISK. IS THAT DOS? YOU'RE INSTALLING DOS?? WHY WOULD

YOU INSTALL DOS WHEN I AM INFINITELY MORE POWE..........

Service Pack #2 doesn't hassle you like this,

It just installs and then doesn't work.

I think Microsoft realized that XP could be made half-way usable, and so had to update it to correct this oversight.

Windows 2000 Professional (also known as NT5) Service Pack 4, with a few XP drivers - that's all you need.

No fuss, no muss, and better security. I've even shoved Windows 98/ME drivers down its throat before, and it took them for USB devices.

I've never had a problem with XP myself. I had Xp installed for two year or was it one(?), and the only time I had to install it again was when I installed XP with SP2 preinstalled -- I figured that would be more stable/secure then installing SP2 _afterwards_ as an afterthought.

Don't get me wrong though, i'm not a fan of M$. But I guess I do know my way around the desktop well enough to tweak it and if something breaks I know how to go in and fix it.

I wish Be Inc was still alive :(... I long for the days of BeOS.. _that's_ what one could call an "Operating System". From power on to desktop in 5 seconds. Installed my Nvidia graphics card by draging and copying a file(driver) to a system folder and -click- the monitor changes modes and I could run 3D stuff *drool in corner of mouth*.

If any of it's forks(hobby resurections) get support for C#(programming language) I will change in a heartbeat, cuz then I'd be able to make all the applications I'm laking.

Ops, sorry.. started daydreaming..

Are you boys playing with Win XP Home Edition or XP Pro?

If you have that lowlife Home Edition, get XP Pro. If you have XP Pro, you should not be having trouble with SP-2...

When I got my last PC, it came with Win XP, but when Talula and I were building it we wiped it clean and installed Win 2000 Pro. On my next trip I brought 3 pcs and we did the same to them. So far not a single problem.

As B. used to call it, as if that "sodding-paper-clip-fucker" wasn't bad enough, Windows XP put a stupid dog in the search box and other annoying features that constantly harrass the user, thus making it impossible to get any work done. I'd ditch it too.

I have no idea why you boys are having a snit about Win XP?... Like I said, if you are playing with the "Home Edition", then you deserve to have problems.

I have been using XP Pro on 3 different PCs for a couple of years now. I have not had any of the problems you talk about. I use these machines 8-10 hours a day at work and then more time at home. I have 1 machine doing what we call production processing and it has not skipped a beat. In fact, not one of these machines has crashed or did any of the stuff you guys describe.

That makes me wonder how you have the O.S. set up, oh, I forgot, you must be running the piece of turds called "Home Edition"...

Take care,
