Story Deletion / Nonacceptance Facts
Re: Story Deletion / Nonacceptance Facts
Actually, I was wondering if anyone was going to check and see if "gullible" WAS missing.

Re: Story Deletion / Nonacceptance Facts
I don't have a current hard copy dictionary. However I have one on my computer. Merriam-Webster ver 2.11 copyright 1994-1995 by Zane Publishing. Guess what? Gullible is not in it.Paolo wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2004 3:10 pm Actually, I was wondering if anyone was going to check and see if "gullible" WAS missing.![]()

Fortunately, on the other side of the Atlantic, we're not 'gulls' (see Oxford English Dictionary
) & therefore don't regard Websters as our etymological bible. :tongueout

Re: Story Deletion / Nonacceptance Facts
WELL!!!
Talk about your English slang.
I ALWAYS use The American Heritage Dictionary.
My 1985 2nd edition has such wonderful words in it as...
asinine, ataraxia, frig, (as in frigging), cock, (#7 slang The penis), cockamamie, (which could describe this thread accurately), cunt, dick, fuck, fucked up, fucker, fucking, fruticose, piss, pissant, pizzazz, pussy, and yes, it has...
gullible (gul'-i-ble) adj. Easily deceived or duped. [<GULL 2. ] -- gullibility n. -- gullibly adv. ]
The American Heritage Dictionary has been banned in several public school systems because it has many, many explicit words in it and it is better if the Teachers and Princpals do not know what the children are actually saying.
That way, nobody knows that frigging really means masturbation and the parents don't have to be called in whenever a kid says it.
I got sent home for saying "crap" once... Dad said it all the time. But he only said it when he was trying to be nice. Otherwise it was shit. There was also a lot of son-of-a-bitch, Goddammed, hell, and so forth.
Those are all in the American Heritage Dictionary, too.
Pureos, you won't find none of that shit in the BIBLE, either. Only in the American Heritage Dictionary can you find it.

OK, I guess it's time to explain my joke.
You'd be gullible if you went and checked to see if gullible was in the dictionary after being told it wasn't. Get it?!
It was only a joke.
Obviously, one that was missed.
As for A-1's reply, I still don't get it, so I guess we're all even.

Paolo,
Sometimes the unsaid is best left that way. But in this case, I'll make an excpetion. Anybody who sends you such a messed up essay hoping to get it into the Archive deserves to have their work "canned".
Writing should be a thing of pride. If you aspiring authors out there did not learn how to write in school, I suggest that you back and learn. Don't try to pass that kiddie lingo crap off on the old men here at the archive that suffices in the chat rooms of the hormonally challenged set. We do not have that problem here.
As for the dictionary thing, I think that it is terrible to censor a dictionary, which is what has been done, historically. You see, language is a living thing and just because you don't see words in the English language does not mean that they don't exist and that they are not being used.
It is a bit like being disowned by your family. They can refuse to acknowledge your existance, but it does not mean a thing, except that they are frigging, asinine, fucking, fucked up, pissants.
Similarly, the great POO PAHS who edit the dictionaries need to put the language in as it is used, not as the censors approve. Ignoring a word used by millions every day does not change a fucking thing.

Since I was the first person to look up the word in the dictionary, I want to say I didn't miss the joke! I was being droll. I chose to see the joke and (in ganbling terms) raise you one joke by seriousness!

Oxford English Dictionary (ref: my earlier post in this thread):-
Gull (from which the word 'gullible' is derived
) = dupe or fool :tongueout

Just a quick thought, Paolo, did you happen to be a Family Guy fan by any chance?
