What would be the best female hormone product(s)/dosage(s) to combine with the anti-androgen Spironolactone, and if possible, where could one get the best deals?

Thanks!!

1. Do you want feminization?

Estradiol, 1-2 mg taken 3 times per day, take only the amount needed to relieve symptoms.

2. No thanks

10 mg medroxyprogesterone taken once per day.

Hello Spirono13,

I'm currently taking 2mg Estradiol tabs (8mg a day) along with the Spironolactone. The combination seems to be effective for me, but everyone will vary within a given dose. Start at a low dose then if need be increase slowly until you reach a point that is working. More is not better in most cases. It will take time. This is a very slow proccess and should never be rushed into.

I don't have the need to search for a lower price because I get a prescription for them and my insurance pays for most. If you can get a prescription, I do know of a few sites that you can get them for just a few pennies a day without insurance.

As always, it's best to have a checkup or be under a doctors care while doing this. I know this is not always possible so be careful if you decide to take matters into your own hands.

Thanks for all that good info, Awen.

I am looking for a feminizing product, so I guess Estradiol would be the one. One more question: is Estradiol a 'name brand' or a type of hormone? The reason I am asking is because I couldn't find it in the website you recommended. I checked the 'Hormones' section and the 'Contraceptives' section, but I didn't seem to locate it. It's probably just too early in the morning for me to be searching for stuff... :-)

Thanks,

Christina,

thanks for your response and the info. I am not sure just yet whether the prescription is going to be a viable option in this matter. On the other side, and because I do have a prescription to Spironolactone, I am getting liver checks periodically so the safety mechanism is already in place. :-)

I think for now a place that delivers without prescription would be what I am looking for, but if I get my doctor to write me a script, I will ask you about those inexpensive websites.

If I may ask, what dosage of Spironolactone are you on? I have been on 200 mg / day for a while, but it doesn't seem to have hardly any effect on me.

Thanks again,

Hi,

Estradiol is one of 3 estrogens (the most potent) that is naturally produced in our bodies. Not the brand name.

Check for brand names: Estrofem, Estrace, Progynova, Climaval, Zumenon

Avoid: Premarin, Diane 35, Ethinyl Estradiol and any contraceptive pill except Climen as these contain estrogens that are harder on the liver, with a higher risk of DVT and not bio-identical.

Also comes in gels: Estrodose, Estrogel, Sandrena

In nasal spray: Aerodiol

In patches: Estraderm, Climara, Vivelle

Injections: Progynon-Depot, Delestrogen. Avoid Depo-Estradiol.

Sites that sell without prescription and are reliable:

Good luck!

Erika :)

I am also at 200mg/day Spironolatone. Perhaps it is the combination of the two (Spiro and Estradiol) that has given me the effects I desire.

Spironolactone is a diuretic and is used for treating hypertension. In effect it will lower blood presure by ridding the body of excess water. Frequent urination along with a decrease in sexual function are some of the side effects. Do you have any of these effects now? What was the indication to have your doctor put you on this medication?

I have heard that Spironolactone is a popular choice amoung doctors as an anti-androgen in treating transgender persons. I have also heard that dosages will vary depending on body mass and weight. My doctor also checks hormone levels to keep them within normal female ranges and feels that this dose is sufficient in reducing testosterone levels.

Spirono13,

One other question I might ask is: How long have you been taking Spironolactone? It might take several months before you will feel it's effects on you so give it time if it hasn't been that long.

Christina,

I have been taking Spirono for more than 2 years now. My doctor started me with 50 mg/day and every 6 months or so he has been increasing the dosage in 50 mg/day. I think now it's been more than 7 months with the current dosage of 200 mg/day.

Regarding frequent urination, I noticed a difference when I started with the 50 mg/day dosage. Further dosage increases have not changed the frequency of urination enough for me to notice.

As far as decreased sexual function, the only thing I have noticed is a decrease in spontaneous erections. Regular sexual function remains unchanged.

Spironolactone together with Propecia was first prescribed for alopecia when I noticed thinning of the hair. It seems to work decently in that sense. Strangely enough, it was my doctor who suggested Spironolactone in the first place, and I only read about the other anti-androgenic effects afterward.
