The Hunger Games, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are all examples of The Hero’s Journey. Luke Skywalker didn’t simply leave home and blow up the Death Star. There was a whole lot of stuff that happened to him along the way prior to blowing up the Death Star.

Would Star Wars have been a better movie if they had simply cut the middle out? Perhaps. The run time would’ve been about twenty minutes. But I think it was the middle that made the payoff at the end all the more satisfying.

Five boys by Coyan Hyde seemed to be the Hero’s Journey but without the middle.
