Re: Please Read & Help :-)
I would prefer birth sex to be optional. Let them search the archives for clues as to my past for I shall not confess except as needed.
ideally: male, female, other, prefer not to respond.
"birth gender" is generally regarded by the gender communities as an undefined term for the proper term is birth sex for gender is not evident except by questioning and observation. A natal child is not sentient enough to say what his, her or its gender is, but a doctor can in most cases declare a birth sex. You may wish to change "birth gender" to "Assigned Gender", but all fields should be optional.
You should always have a prefer not to respond field when your software requires a response because null is a valid state.

Re: Please Read & Help :-)
Hey Bboy - a good option instead of sexual orientation that would make it easier on anybody who doesn't fit the traditional male/female would just be to say, "What do you like sexually?" Then the options could be along the lines of men, women, m2f, f2m, neuter, nothing, whatever. That way you get around the problem of people like JemaGirl having to try to categorize themselves, and the "Transgender" category doesn't become a catchall.
Re: Please Read & Help :-)
I added "No Response" on the birth gender question.
I disagree that every question should have a "no response" answer or be optional. In most cases it's a very small thing to ask people to give very basic information about themselves in exchange for access to the services of this forum.

Zoroaster .. I like your suggestion except that it doesn't address being able to find people with similar interests. For example if I wanted to search for "men" (as in being attracted to men) not only would I get gay males, but all the straight females.
