I didn't get a chance to see this movie either. The thing that caught my eye the most was the fact that someone at Hunter College helped in the making of it. This weekend I'm going to be helping out there (Fencing World Cup Championships), and am appalled that someone so close to home, or anyone for that matter, could help to produce such slander. I applaud everyone here (and everyone in general) that continues to fight for their rights. The topic of castration should not be shrouded in mystery and myths of mental illness, and it's a great inspiration to me to know that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Hello, I just saw this movie at a small public screening last night and one of the film makers was there and the tone of his comments made it very clear how he felt about the eunuch community.

On the way out the door, I asked him if there was a eunuch community in Italy (apparently he comes from Trieste, whereever that is). He said no, not that he knew of, but... And I walked away from him.

He also said that this film wasn't making them (he and his partner) rich. That must be a big disappointment for him, since that was obviously their sole goal.

Anyway, it remains to be seen that a decent, respectful film can be made about Eunuchism. Maybe some of the members here could pool their resources?

Best wishes,

-Squirm E.

Rather than pooling financial resources, we need to persuade a sympathetic director of documentaries, such as Kate Davis, to make a film about eunuchs.

If you haven't already seen it, Kate Davis' film Southern Comfort is a true gem. It is a very sympathetic look at the last year of the life of Robert Eads, born Barbara Eads, who is dying of ovarian cancer. All of the area doctors and hospitals refused to treat him because, as a female to male transexual, he would "scare off or offend" their other patients.

Through the entire film, Robert Eads, and his friends and adopted family, shine through as intelligent, kind, and loving people. The film is a powerful indictment of gender prejudice without ever preaching.

My very straight cousin who taped the film off the Discovery Channel to send it to me told me recently that she still cries whenever she thinks of how cruelly the community treated these people. Her husband - also incredibly straight - has commented that all three of the FtM transsexuals in the film were people he would like to have as friends.

This kind of absolutely accurate, but sympathetic portrayal is what is really needed.

VHS and DVD copies of the film are available through Amazon, and I now have a properly purchased copy to help support the filmmaker.

I have recently viewed both “American Eunuchs” and “Southern Comfort” documentaries (thanks to Jesus and Sag111). I found American Eunuchs to be shallow and drawn out, never really hitting on much of the key points about the medical issues involved in becoming a eunuch. It also left me feeling that Philadelphia (the portions that they showed), was a run down inner city leaving much to be desired. I’m sure every city has its places where it is not very attractive. I had never been to Dr. Spector’s office, but I was under the impression it was just a few blocks away from some of the most highly cultural parts of the city.

Southern Comfort, on the other hand, is a very inspirational, sympathetic and informative documentary set in rural Georgia. Something that American Eunuchs will never come close to. I may be a little bias towards Southern Comfort because I can relate to the film in a way that some will never know. I found myself emotionally drawn into the film through the plight of the people involved and their dealings with family members, friends and the medical community.

What I would like to see is a film dedicated to those not just seeking to lower libido, but real information about cancer and some of the history of eunuchs and what is being done today for those seeking these options.

Transgender issues appear throughout history and cultures. That most of us in Western society know little or nothing about such matters diminishes us. I perhaps know more than many people know. Unfortunately, I know little. I have heard a lecture or two about the topic, but not much. The best lecture that I have heard was part of a seminar that Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon presented well over a quarter century ago in Portland. Even then, the lecture was only part of a seminar on homosexuality.

I have read several books by John Money, who sadly appears to have been quite wrong about major issues related to gender. I would love to see a decent and helpful documentary on the topic.

Thanks to Jesus, I have seen the offending documentary. It is offending. I will comment more fully later.

Softee,

Don't feel too badly,

Most of these stuffed-shi(r)ts and stiff-collar idiots wouldn't know a real Eunuch even if somebody came in the night and cut their balls off.
