Norton Antivirus 2004

If any of you were unlucky enough to buy, install, or renew your Norton Antivirus and/or Personal Firewall subscriptions this month, you're probably in for a rough ride. After doing so, I was prompted after 3 weeks - when I was allegedly good for a year - that my subscriptions had run out and Live Update no longer admitted that I had NAV or Firewall installed. Both programs ran, but would not update, prompting the user to resubscribe over and over again.

The only viable solution, after about 12 total hours of searching the site and finally calling tech support (2 hour hold time) is to uninstall and reinstall the software.

And if you didn't buy the service online for re-downloads, you're screwed out of your money. Luckily, I did buy that and one registration key handled the whole issue. Also, calling tech-support is a $29.99 charge to talk to them, and if you're lucky, they'll admit their fault and not charge you. I was lucky in THAT respect.

My advice?

Use something else. Anything else. This happened to me three times now on 2 PC's, and it won't happen again. Next time, I'm buying a Macafee box-set!

I have had good luck with McAfee Virusscan & Guardian. They also provide regular periodic updates.

Well,

You could all dump M$ off your computers and start using Linux.

Then you would not have to worry about viruses because they do not function on Linux.

It would allso save you the money for M$ licenses and Virusscanners.

Don't use Norton or Macafee antivirus software. there is antivirus software online that your local ISP should know and it free with Online Updates. The only bad part about it is that It doen't cover any damage to your computer, but if you think about it, Niether does your name brand antivirus software that you buy.

Not true. I Have Windows machines, Mac machines and linux AND Unix machines and there are viruses that I have had to remove from all of them.

If you remember the Trogen horse worm and the blaster worm a little whlile back; well it was only supposed to effect Win XP and Win 2K but I which it did hit my 3 of my computers with those operating systems on them, but it also hit my Win 98 machine, Win ME machine, my Mac 9.0 machine, my G4 mac OSX machine my Red Hat Linux 9 Professional machine and did software damage or completely crashed them all. It does't matter what operating system that you are running, if you have internet access or share files from on computer to another, you are still susseptable (spelling) to viruses and worms.

Excuse my language but his is Bullshit.....

The Trojans you mention only work on Windows. What is true is that they generate massive network connections which will of course affect all traffic in your network and that will affect each os/pc in a different way according to its purpose/setup. If you felt you needed to reinstall your Mac and Linux machines because of this you might need to get some (real) expert help in. Your claim of software damage on Linux/Mac due to one of these worms is completely unfounded. To be fair there are a few worms that work on Linux... about 2 or 3 compared to the +60000 known Windows viri. But due to the nature of Linux/Unix file permissions they will not be able to corrupt your os. Only your own files if you are careless enough to unleach it, something that will not happen without an action from your side. One of these Linux worms actually fixed the vulnerability that allowed it to 'infect' the computer it got to.

Please put some sense of reality in your posts
