Story statistics

Post by Shortie (imported) »

This suggestion was made by my wife, who many of you know has authored most of the stories posted under my username.

It would be interesting to see a listing of the stories accompanied by a figure for the number of times they have been read. Some of my stories have been read over 7,000 times, which is nice to know. However, since there is no way to compare this number to those of other authors, it doesn't have a lot of impact.

If it would take an inordinate amount of work by the Webmaster to do such a thing, then that's okay too. I'll continue to post and read either way. Good Website, guys (or gals, as the case may be)!

It might seem like a good idea, but the general feeling between the three of us is that the hits on someone else's stories are really no one else's business. The story hit tracker can work both ways, you know.

For example, one of my stories which I dearly love was basically ignored by a vast majority of readers, while one that I did in a fit of depression at a very dark time of my life is so highly read that it scares me. Frankly, I'm ashamed of it.

Other authors may feel differently, which they're certainly entitled to, but we don't think that hits statistics for the public are a good idea.🚬

The other factor is really length of time posted. When Paolo ocassionally posts the top stories, those are ordered by a formula that we devised that takes in to account both the number of hits and the time the story has been posted on the Archive.

A direct comparison of a story that's been up a year, versus one that's been up two years would be useless.

Even given our rating forumla on that page the top 100 or so stories tend to be roughly chronological in order just because when a new story is posted it tends to take a LOT of hits right away, thus driving up its hit rating.

No, that feature was destroyed during the hack some time ago and can't be repaired. Sorry.

This thread is four years old. At that time only an author or administrator could view a story's stats, unless you knew how to hack into them, which was actually pretty easy to do. Now, the number of hits are listed at to bottom of each story, so anyone can see how many hits it's received.
