Try the bar at 14th St and 9th Avenue. It is a triangle shape, used to be called J's, may still be. They have private parties in the basement certain nights and you're sure to find what you want there. Don't know if the Anvil is still there, but it was also good for the unusual. Hope you like NYC. You should do well there. I'll bet you'll find it freer than SF even.
