Getting Simon: Two Gay Doctors' Journey to Fatherhood

Book Description

Someone once said that a literary classic is a book that captures the essence of its own time, place, and culture while simultaneously transcending those limits to achieve universality. By that definition is already a classic. It is an absorbing inspirational journey into one man's obsession to create a family. Not just a gay book this is a profoundly human testimony to the strength of the human spirit. Overcoming all odds, Dr. Morgen and his life partner, Sam, show us how love caring and unshakable determination can triumph over prejudice and disappointment.

You may have asked yourself why I have posted a review of this book. One reason is that it may provide some insight for any gays couples here who are wanting to raise a child. The other, more profound, is that I know one of the doctors that this book is written about. My personal physician is Dr "Sam" who has been treating me for M2F hormones. Even though I only meet him on occasion on a profesional level, his kindness and caring for individuals like myself is outstanding. The medical community, as a whole, should have more doctors like this. I guess I was lucky to find such a doctor when most turned the backs to me.

a better read on a same sex couple getting a baby is dan savage's "the kid" which gives a really human picture of the process he and his partner went through to become parents. savage is much more focused on the baby, the baby's birthparents, the difficulties a baby brings (his description of him and his lover changing the baby's diaper in an airplane toilet is hilarious).

dan savage, btw, writes the weekly "savage love" column which appears in many alternative papers.
