It's a real shame when men who desire castration should have to go to back alley practicioners for surgery. It reminds me when abortion was illegal in the US and woman had to put themselves through the same risks. With our health care system in the shape that it's in and our current political climate being as it is, It's going to be a long time before Eunuchs and transgendered people finally receive the medical care that they deserve.

I don't know if I would go that far as to say "It's a real shame" in this particular case. I would speculate that part of this eunuch's fantasy may be to be castrated in this kind of circumstance, just because it is illegal and "back alley". The actual surgery is not usually the point, it is the fantasies and planning building up to it, and/or the fantasies that can be played out subsequent to recovery, playing off of all the literature of eunuchs.
I don't quite understand everything in that particular report (nor do I have much confidence that the media can report such stories fairly). If the cutter couldn't get the bleeding stopped, I'd say he was morally obligated to call for help. I don't know why that didn't happen, and would fault the man for that. Otherwise, I don't see these privately arranged events as injustices if some common-sense precautions are taken. (Bring a friend along, know what to do if something goes wrong.)
With all the resources available on the web today, It isn't that difficult to find a licensed doctor, if want to go that way.

That eunuch has actually posted on this forum before by the name of Don. I thought he sought the castration for purely practical reasons, though---he was HIV-positive, therefore he could not in good conscience have sex with anyone, but he still had a sex drive so he wished to be rid of it.

Well, Dr. Kimmel will castrate just about anyone, but he does charge $2000 (that's impossible to pay for some people) and one would have to be able to travel to Philadelphia to see him...

Re: Anyone seen this story?
I thought it was interesting that thay called it a fetish like we were all a bunch of nut caces. This i feel is a slam on the person like myself who feels the need to rid himself of testosterone. Most of us dont do this for a fitish trip but that is the way thay love to portray us and with that kind of an attude we will never get the medical comunity to help us.I feel like the luckiest man in Cal since my doctor didnt laugh at me or send me to the shrink but gave me the prescription i needed for chemical castration and said i could be on this as long as i wanted.
We need more doctors like mine who are not afraid to help us but articales like that one can only hert us
FETISH MY ASS

The stories indicate fetish interests. However, many posts indicate anything but fetish interest. I find myself interested both in fetishes related to penectomy and in the reality of changes in hormone levels. Those changes relate to medication and age. All of this intrigues me and is important to me. I have physicians and books to help with the changes in horomons but not a community outside this one with whom to share the feelings related to loss of libido.

I have no idea why you would associate the word "fetish" with "nut cases".
Fetish (from http://www.m-w.com/):
1.c : an object or bodily part whose real or fantasied presence is psychologically necessary for sexual gratification and that is an object of fixation to the extent that it may interfere with complete sexual expression.
I would certainly reject your contention that "most of us" simply "
" Especially when you neglect any exploration of what is driving that need. Any random sample of submissions to the story archives (the central aspect of this site: http://www.eunuch.org/phpPolls/pollviewer.php, Topic: What is Your Favorite Archive Feature?) clearly indicate that the "us" participating in this web community are interested in much more than a simple reduction in testosterone levels, if that were the case most of the stories would revolve around the results of blood tests.
I would also hope the doctor of the luckiest man in Cal explained to him the very real cancer risks that accompany the most common drug used for "chemical castration", depro-provera.

The Police and prosecutor were not interested in the truth and made it into a media show so they could get public support and such.
