Absence of Paolo
I spoke to Paolo this evening on his cell phone. There's been a major storm through his area with nearly 6000 homes loosing power. Way out in the countryside as he is, he may not get power or internet back for a week or so. No new fiction will be posted until he can get back on line. His comments and weather reports will not appear. He's O.K., just hot and sweaty with no power and no water other than bottled. He's on a well with an electric pump.

OUCH! I hope he can come up w/ a generator... I'd offer to loan him ours, but it's kind of a long distance to deliver...
Definitely wishing him the best in getting power back soon.

I lived that life in California - out in the country with an electric utility that likes to randomly cut the power off. No Power = No Water. Now they do Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). The first year the utility would watch the weather and let you know you'd be without for a day or two in all likelihood. Now no notice, you just lose power, and with it your ability to have water. At least with the warning, you could fill containers of water before they shut the electric off. Now you have to keep it on hand in containers, "just in case."
Personally, I don't think the PSPS stands for what it does above, it stands for Protecting Shareholders Power Shutoffs.
Maybe if instead of paying dividends they would fix the crappy electric equipment in the area, they wouldn't have to worry about their equipment starting fires.
Paolo will be back soon, and when he's back, I'm sure Installment 8 of my latest tome will be posted. I submitted it, and just though maybe he went walkabout for a few days for the holiday here in the US.
He did text me and let me know he's ok, though. Just inconvenienced.

Re: Absence of Paolo
I'm back! We got power back last night. The repairmen left the 3 story walnut tree down, though, which we were delighted to see. It cuts 99% of the traffic, except for the looky-loos who drive past the ROAD CLOSED sign to see why the road is closed.
The first thing I did, after getting the invisible fence system for the Dire Wolf, I mean "dog", next door going again, was take a long, cool shower and then shave.
I had a lot of water stored up, and I can take the cap off my well and use a bucket on a rope to get more, if I have to. I also had 100 gallons of rain water stored up for the plants and garden, which I also use to wash dishes (with a shot of bleach!) and flush the toilet.
I'm fine, thanks for the thoughts.
I also have a generator, but it won't run the AC unit.
I'll get the stories caught up when I have time. Still a lot of cleanup going on here, and back to work, as power was back on in town the next day.
I'll post about it in the weather thread.

Re: Absence of Paolo
Glad to hear you are back up and doing well!
"Yard trees" are always problematic as material for anything other than firewood (all the potential remnants from nails and other stuff that gets into them can seriously mess up the saws at a mill), but walnut is nice stuff and expensive to purchase, especially in big chunks or 'live edge'... If you know any serious wood crafters let them know and I'd bet they will be happy to make the tree 'disappear ' for you...
