Registrations from India

Post by fhunter »

This is a question for moderation staff on the forum.

In chat I was told, that it is impossible to register an account on the forum from India, because forum is unavailable directly due to ISP filtering, and when using VPN - well, it breaks the rule against specifying real location and not using VPN for registration.

I wonder if anything can be done about that?

There is no filtering of registrations from India. As has been stated before I do not accept VPN registrations, because I cannot verify the poster's location. Don't need a locality, just a country (NOT USA or EU), state, or similar location. I do look at the information someone has posted. If they seem oblivious to our reality, or make derogatory remarks, or similar things which make me question whether they know what we are about, I disallow them. My general attitude when reviewing registrations is to allow them in unless there is an obvious reason not to do so.

I have not placed an bans that would take out all of India. I wouldn't even want to try.

No idea if it might be the case, but any chance the filtering is occurring on the other end? I.e. is there any sort of filtering done by the India gov't or their ISP's? Something similar to the infamous "Great Firewall" done by the Communist China gov't in order to 'protect' their citizens from western ideas?

I'd suspect that EA would probably be filtered by any sort of 'Nanny-ware' software given the sort of stuff we talk about here...

That could make it impossible to register from an India address as Fhunter reported, w/o any filtering on the EA end.... Just a thought, and I could easily be wrong since I don't have any data about India 'acceptable use policy'

The problem is, that if there is ISP filtering from India, the only way to access the Archive is through a VPN. The people I correspond with in China need to use a VPN to reach the outside.
