Orchiectomy in February 2023

originally my wife wanted to ask some questions here but for some reason the admin kept deleting her account. I didn't want to ask about anything but as the planned orchiectomy is getting closer I have decided to find some answers.

I am a trans woman and I will undergo orchiectomy in February 2023, because of legal issues I have to travel abroad - about 500 kms there and 500 kms back. I will only spend a few hours at the clinic because I can't afford staying there. This means that I will stay in a hotel for one night after the surgery and then I will have to travel 500 kms either by train or by car to get home. My wife will be taking care of me 24/7 and she is worried that I might feel too much pain.

Can you share your experience a few hours after the surgery? Is the pain bearable? Is it likely that I will be able to travel easily without complications?

I would listen to your body and see how it feels. I would also listen to the advice of your doctors.

When I was castrated, I was in a significant amount of pain after, but by about the 2nd or 3rd day, things were much better. I was sore for at least 2-weeks after the surgery. I first operated an automobile 5 days after my surgery.

I think it would be better if you spent a couple more days than you're planning in the location of the clinic. It will give you time to rest and have your pain level go down some before you travel home.

I agree with Losethem re: listen to your body.

Will you have pain meds? My doctor gave me Tylenol with codeine, and that plus ice packs meant I didn't feel much pain at all. Granted, I wasn't undergoing the stress of travel.

Well, staying for longer is possible for maybe one more day, it is very expensive and I won't be alone. And staying for longer still only means staying in the hotel nearby - I would prefer being in my own bed.

I got a prescription for tramadol which could help.

You're always free to do what you think is best for you. Nobody here will try to stop you. All we're trying to do is give you our best advice, from personal experience, having been through the surgery ourselves. Trust us, while you should move around a bit after your surgery, you don't want to be out doing extensive walking, riding transit, or other even minor physical activities for at least a couple of days, and perhaps longer. All things which you'll have to do in the after surgery travel scenario you describe.

Put another way, which will be more expensive? Staying another night or two in the hotel, or having to go to the hospital with extensive bleeding, or worse, because you failed to heed the advice or those who have had this surgery before you, or the advice of your doctor?

Again, I won't stop you, and I hope it comes out well for you. However, if it doesn't, you were warned.

I simply can't stay longer than for two days. If anything happened at home healthcare is completely cover by public insurance, still I hope that I won't have to use it.

If I could just get in a car and travel home (about 6 hours) would it still cause problems? I would be only sitting inside and get out in front of my house.

I don't think it would be suicide, but it's very much not something that's advisable to do. I think a car with door-to-door service would be the middle choice of the three options now present (1. Stay longer, 2. Travel by car, 3. Travel by public transport) as you'd be walking a lot less.
