Mandatory Login
The last couple of times I came to the EA I had to login to even get into the forum. If that is a permanent change, I would ask you to re-consider. I got hooked over time by just casually dropping in. I found some of the people and topics interesting which led to an account. Especially now I have a built-in resistance to accounts because that often only leads to emails forever into the future. It is nothing specific against the EA, just a general pushback. If you throw up the slightest obstacle, you will eliminate some potential new contributors. I think general access should be as easy as possible and then you add login if people want to send IMs, etc. Just my opinion.

Re: Mandatory Login
I have to agree. If I wouldn't have been able to view the threads as a guest, I probably would never have taken the step to register here. The barrier would have been too high. Furthermore, the now hidden forum makes our community less visible and that could promote the idea here do happen strange or even forbidden things. Don't know if this is beneficial. Just my thoughts about it.

For now, it's going to stay this way.
I understand the problem, and I sympathize.
Sorry for any inconvenience, but that's just how it has be be at this time.

Re: Mandatory Login
Accounts are free. We're glad you got to peruse as a guest, but for now this is the way it will be until certain problems pass. Rest assured, it's not any user here which has created this issue.
The accounts are free, as in, NO COST, and it's not that hard to set-up. People can still lurk even if they have an account, and frankly, I'm not sure why it should stop anyone other than a casual person. At least at this point we can't be accused of letting children in without a challenge, because you know our enemies in the world will ALWAYS bring up that their slander is about protecting children, when it has no basis in that. And Jesus Fuck-on-shingle is it impossible to defend yourself against people who throw that accusation at you, as has been done recently to the EA.
Would I like the EA to be completely open to guests? Certainly. But we're dealing with a significant issue, created by a pernicious guest who is getting traction with folks in positions to harm this community. This guest is writing libelous things about the EA, and people in a position of power which can set this community back decades are unfortunately taking it seriously, though it's clearly libel. If they'd look-up the information on their own as all good academics should, we'd not be having issues, but because they can't be bothered to look up and consider the source of the libelous information for what it is, this is unfortunately creating a need for this password barrier.
This lack of follow-up and considering the source for what it is, is a sad state of affairs among the group of people who consider themselves academics, but here we are.
Maybe one day we can throw the doors back open, but for now, we have to do this so at least there is a password wall and it's not simply open to anyone to stumble across. At the moment people who are on here have to take specific action to be here (sign up for an account), and it's one heck-uv-a-lot harder for them to claim their innocence has been lost because they stumbled on this accidentally, when they had to actively do something to be here making it no accident.
