Man's penis cut off after begging

A man was taken to a Johannesburg hospital in a critical condition after his penis was cut off, allegedly by four unidentified men in Benoni on the East Rand on Friday.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman said on Sunday the man approached the group, who were in a car, and asked them for some money.

The four told the man to get into their car and drove with him to an open field in Benoni where they assaulted him. They drove away after cutting his penis off.

The injured man managed to attract the attention of people nearby and was rushed to hospital. He was in a critical but stable condition.

Opperman said the remains of his penis were not found. Police were unable to properly identify the man, who has been heavily sedated.

"We are, however, confident we will identify and arrest the four attackers soon," he said.
