Gender affirming treatment as a nonbinary transgender person worked for me in New Zealand. Step one was to see my GP (super-LGBT-friendly lesbian) and get a referral to an open-minded urologist (private). Step two was to get the psychiatric assessment my urologist required (public). Step three was for my urologist to refer me back to the public health service because the only local private surgical hospital is Catholic and forbids gender affirming surgery. Step four was orchidectomy (public).

I also had weekly psychotherapy for two years, but physicians seem to only trust other physicians (i.e. psychiatrists) for mental health assessments, and my therapist was never asked for an opinion. Therapy was a great help and I recommend it to anyone. Gender identity was only a small part, but therapy helped me understand why.

The draft WPATH Standards of Care V8 has new chapters for both nonbinary people and eunuchs. Hopefully this will open the minds of more urologists.
