Man bitten by snake on the genitals recovers!

A man from the Netherlands had to have reconstructive surgery on his penis after suffering a bite from a cobra while sitting on the toilet.

The otherwise healthy 47-year-old was on vacation in South Africa at a nature reserve when the cobra struck from the toilet and clamped on to his genitals, according to the details published in Urology Case.

The man waited three hours to be transported by helicopter to the nearest trauma centre, some 350 kilometres away, after suffering what the medical journal described as the first case of “snouted cobra envenomation of the genitals.”

During that presumably torturous wait, the victim reported feeling “a burning sensation in his genitals and a pain that ascended through his groin to his flank, upper chest, and abdomen.”

When he arrived at the hospital, his genitals were swollen and a deep purple colour, which doctors say indicated scrotal necrosis – more commonly referred to as “flesh-eating disease.”

He received multiple doses of a non-specific snake venom antiserum and broad-spectrum antibiotics, according to the medical report.

“The scrotal necrosis was reported to involve the entire fascia (skin to internal spermatic) and was excised with extensive margins,” read the report. “The defect in the penile shaft was treated by superficial debridement and a vacuum assisted closure pump.”

Nine days later, the man returned to the Netherlands where a plastic surgeon performed a “penile shaft debridement, with extensive resection of dead tissue extending into the corpus spongiosum to the fold of the preputium.”

Following that, a graft from his groin was placed over the penis.

He was discharged from hospital two weeks later.

In the man’s follow-up appointment, doctors found the wounds had successfully healed and function and sensation to his penis had fully recovered.

Let's not take up snake handling as an hobby.

Dutch man bitten by snake on toilet undergoes reconstructive surgery _ Nov 05, 2021

What a nightmare, I already go to the toilet with apprehension :).

The Dutchman was in Africa, where he was bitten by a cobra ...

And earlier there was a message about the Austrian:

Python bites Austrian man on the toilet _ Jul 05, 2021

VIENNA — An Austrian had the kind of morning that nightmares are made of on Monday when a python slid through his drains and bit him while he was sitting on the toilet.

The stunned 65-year-old in the city of Graz turned around shortly after 6 a.m. to see a roughly 1.6-meter (5-foot) albino reticulated python in the bowl, police in the province of Styria said in a statement.

“Shortly after he sat on the toilet the Graz resident – by his own account – felt a ‘pinch’ in the area of his genitals,” the police statement said.

The snake, a constrictor native to Asia that can grow to more than 9 meters (29 feet) long, is thought to have escaped a neighbour’s apartment unnoticed and slid into the toilet through the drains, though its exact route was still unclear, the police said.

A reptile expert contacted by the emergency services removed the snake from the toilet, cleaned it and returned it to its owner. Its victim was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The 24-year-old neighbour, who owns 11 snakes, all non-venomous constrictors, has been reported to the prosecutors’ office on suspicion of negligently causing bodily harm, the police added.

Some people who keep snakes as "pets" are not very careful about them. I had an acquaintance in elementary school who was keeping his "pet" rattlesnake in a cardboard box in his bedroom. I had thought of him as a friend until I visited one day and he had to show me his snake....

At one point when I was growing up, there was a Holiness Church across the street. (They moved in and out over the course of about three years.) It was a church where they passed poisonous snakes around the congregation during services. When the police raided them (snake handling was illegal at that time), they just dumped the snakes out behind the church.

A lot of people don't know this, or they are not really thinking about it when they think about venomous snakes; venomous snakes can be "milked" and their venom - usually harvested and used in making anti-venoms or used for folk medicine remedies. Immediately after being milked and completely depleted of venom, the "venomous" snake is in fact without venom, most species WILL continue to bite or strike, even though they are not able to inject venom. It takes most snakes a few days to regenerate a lethal dose of venom, that is why quite often, many species of rattle snakes will strike and even though they have venom they will hold back and NOT inject venom even when they have venom, that is because the snake is trying to scare away anything it sees as a threat while saving it's venom for something it will really NEED that venom for, that is something it can eat like a rat or small squirrel. So, my point is, that even when they have venom, many rattle snakes do a "dry bite" unless they are really scared of someone messing with them, and most "snake handlers" are handling snakes that are tame enough that they are accustomed to being handles and not being that agitated, and they are probably milked immediately before the handling session anyway.

Thank you so much for the information.

True, if I see a snake nearby, no matter how poisonous or not, for some reason I will most likely fall into a stupor, I will not be able to milk it! In the best case, I will tear away from her !!!

We used to toss the garden snakes at the girls to scare them. That stopped when my sister picked one up and shoved it down my brother's shirt. Of course, they are not venomous.
