Steam Engine

Post by Arab Nights (imported) »

Sadly with the passing of Uncle Flo we have one less steam engine fan, but for any out there there Union Pacific Big Boy will be doing this year's tour leaving Cheyenne, Wyoming Aug. 5 and going thru Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. You can check the schedule at UP: Steam Schedule. I plan to catch it in Nebraska.

I'm quite fond of steam engines. Especially steam traction engines and cars. I had the honor of being allowed to operate a very unique traction engine on several occasions. I can tell you what it was like some time if you want. I drove Kitten #224 but they were all about the same from what I was told.

Whilst folks don't really warm to Steam turbines.

The queen Mary designed in the 1920s I believe had 3 Turbines fitted.

Thousands of your brave American troops owe their lives to these engineering marvels as there was absolutely nothing at sea that would keep up with this amazing ship.

The only time it could benefit from cover from the Allies was in the first mile of setting sail and then it was on its own.

I think it did suffer damage during an air strike when a plane hit it but noting from anything sea bourne.

I totally forgot about these! The fast battleship era was an amazing time in naval history. They changed all the rules. Suddenly it was possible to project major power so much further away. I think Jingles did a very lovely episode about this on his youtube channel, along with many other ships. I'm particularly fond of the dreadnaughts and the super dreadnaughts, of course. The British navy was and still is very impressive. The performance of their CVs in the Pacific theater in the late stages of world war 2 were very impressive.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Flo, he was a valued contributor here....

On the subject of steam...

If you are ever in that area, there is an amazing museum in Owls Head, Maine... https://owlshead.org/ It is part of the local small airport, and officially is an airplane museum, but they also have a lot of other stuff, including a lot of different steam powered equipment. One of them is among the largest steam engines ever built, a Corliss. They also have a steam powered log skidder (think locomotive on tank treads) and several others...

One of the cool things about it is that there are drip pans under most of the exhibits, with oil in them... This is because everything WORKS - the claim is that they won't put an aircraft on display unless they can roll it out to the runway and fly it, ditto any of the ground machines. The actually have days scheduled in the summer when they do that.

They also have regular special 'live steam' days where they invite members of the public to show up and show off their own collected and home built steam engines...

One of my old Toastmasters speeches was "The Eyes Have It." Watch the eyes of 1 in 10 little boys around steam engines and aircraft and you can see it is in their DNA. I was one and in my dotage still wear my heart on my sleeve for those things.
