Newspaper Cartoon from 1915

I happened to find a New York City newspaper cartoon from 1915. We see a boy who looks to be about 12 and on the cusp of puberty. He's taking a bath. From the adjoining room he hears his mother say, "Girls let me show you how I've remodeled and redecorated the bathroom. Timmy's talking a bath now but he won't mind a bit." The boy looks really freaked out.

I thought boys of that era swam naked all the time and didn't care who saw them in the buff. Perhaps I was wrong. Or perhaps the joke was that the boy was needlessly modest. It was sort of hard to tell.

I had always heard that people proudly swam naked, especially boys and young men, in that time era and that swimming trunks were rare for young males in that time period in America.

Modesty is situational. Having a group of nosy women burst into the bathroom while he's in the tub would be very different from swimming nude and expecting others to be around.
