Actually, the quote was a clip from the Carson show...

I think that it happened sometime around 1969...or so.

Carson asked Arnold Palmer's wife the secret behind his superb golf game or something to that effect to which she replied (allegedly innocently) that "...before he goes out to play I take his balls out and kiss them for good luck..."

To which Carson said something like "...I bet that makes his putter stand on end..."

The sportscasters had a field day with it...

It is a wonder that Arnold Palmer didn't get to Carson before Wayne Newton did.

Everybody loved Carson, but he had a way of pissing certain people off...usually they got over it, though.

I remember seeing the clip of Carson with Palmer's wife now. I thought it was very funny, but these kinds of live TV remarks are always in good taste. i remember once when groucho Marx (1950's) had his quiz show with the Duck coming down. A woman was telling how much fun her husband was and the practical jokes he'd pull. "Once he tied my nightgown in knots and I didn't find it till bedtime."

Groucho: "Wouldn't it have been more fun if he'd tied it in knots while you were still in it?"

Now that the war is over, and the Yankees have left Tara, I think it would be more fun to discuss Paolo's paddle.

Here is the low down skinny from SNOPES:

"So, if there is any truth to this legend at all (and Palmer indicates that there is, contrary to TV Guide's claim that Arnold Palmer was never a guest on the Tonight Show), the "balls" joke was one deliberately made by Johnny Carson, not one that innocently slipped from the lips of Arnold Palmer or his wife.

As I remember the original story,

Carson says: "do you do anything before a match for luck?

Palmer's wife says: "yes, I kiss his balls"

and Carson says: "I'll bet that makes his putter rise!"

And everyone laughs ... It's as good as Jack Benny's line about being a pair of brown shoes on a black suit.

But all the authorities say that it's a legend and never happened. However, being a good conspiracy theorist. . . THere was a law suit and there was a settlement . . . so it may be that the settlement involved denying and destroying the video tape or kinescope.

But paolo's implements are better implemented here. The paddle is okay for the butt, but the weave belt is better for the balls. i ahve one tha I like more, Paolo. it has a silver buckle and a matching metal tip. Leather weave belts are usually too lightweight for an evening's enjoyment. More style than function.

Hell, what difference does it make...

It is not the direct quote anyway, it is the thought that counts...

One thing though...I would be more likely to believe that Carson initiated the whole thing rather than than to believe that Arnold Palmer or his wife did.

Carson was that way, as I mentioned previously.

But hell, we loved him for it anyway...
