Bought a New Computer

Post by TopManFL (imported) »

I bought a wonderful new computer. Great price, great memory, SSD hard drive, 17" monitor (almost as big as Ranger). I LOVE IT.

Now, I have a headache, my eyes are strained, my shoulders ache, I can't remember why I needed a new computer and I think I'm at least 10pct more insane than when I opened the box.

So, why, do I still love my new computer?

Transferring stuff from old one to new one is always a pain. Last time I switched, it took me a full two days to transfer everything. Fortunately, I no longer have the massive professional files to worry about. But it is getting close to the time when I need to switch again. Damn...

I hurry to congratulate you on new acquisition!

Truth at my place problem: I cannot get rid of the favourite home personal computers, hard drives and monitors. Four stationary system units, six external disks, three laptops and five big monitors. Mass of stereo speakers and other. Now my apartment looks as "The Deep Dark Cellar" :)

My system for reinstalling or setting up a new PC is thus:

1. Never store important stuff on the C: drive. Only the OS. Don't buy a huge disc for the C drive. They're disposable.

2. Use an external hard drive or 3 or 5 for photos, music, etc.

3. Keep a copy of all software you installed, if not on a CD/DVD, keep the download on an external. Just reinstall them.

4. Locate the folder C/users/your-user-name/appdata/roaming, once you have all the software installed. Copy that to an external drive. Once you reinstall the apps, replace that new folder with the old one. Viola - you have apps like they were before.

5. When buying new hardware, drop-kick the box or throw it high in the air. Then buy it. If it survived, you got a good one. If it won't work, take it back. repeat.

6. USB sticks - they're cheap. Buy many. Make backups. A lot.

7. If it's a new Windsucker 10 PC, be prepared to make a night of it. I recommend wine. Lots of wine.

When your computer says “Hit any Key to Continue” It doesn’t say what size hammer to hit it with.

My father had a saying “the bigger the problem – the bigger the hammer!”

Why do you guys store stuff on your computers? It slows them down and you can only access them on your computer. Store your stuff in the cloud and then you can access your stuff from your phone or tablet. That’s my PSA for today. Good luck!

And thx @TopManFL for the nice plug for Ranger, he swoll with pride when he heard you say 17” was nearly as big as him!!

And how to be with a TV show? I have, for example, more than 100 GB Star Gate (SG1, Atlantis, Universe), and other collection is hardly located with 6 TB.

Cloud is just someone else's computer. Your data will be checked, cross-correlated and used to show you ads. At best.

At worst - policy is 'we are not responsible for anything'.

Also this: https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/commen ... the_cloud/ or this: https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/n ... trasbourg/ (just google OVH Strassbourg fire - stories of lack of backups, data loss and so on are plenty).

Or how dropbox was deleting your mp3 files which contained copyrighted material, even when they were legal for you.

Or how Yandex.disk client deleted whole drive C: on update, due to a mistake. And so on.

You trust your data with it - your choice. I prefer to have my own "cloud".

I bought the OLED Laptop / large version HP I think

The OLED screen is easier on the eyes.

It's worth the extra.

I did that neat 4 am trick of fixing myself a cup of coffee when I first woke up and then spilled it on my laptop. The computer shop said that ThinkPad had a robust reputation and suggested just putting in a new digital hard drive. They got most everything off the old drive and I am still using it.
