Famotidine (Pepcid) and loss of libido

Post by TopManFL (imported) »

For a long time, I have taken Famotidine 40mg only as needed. A bottle of 30 will last me at over 6 months. Normally, I will take one if I have a late snack before bed or if I eat spicy food for dinner.

In the past two weeks, I have taken it a bit more than normal.

I noticed I was apathetic towards sex. I looked up Famotidine and loss of libido and there it was. Apparently, any histamine blocker can affect libido. Heartburn medication falls into several categories and Famotidine is a histamine blocker.

It's difficult to describe exactly how my lack of interest in sex manifested itself. Basically, I just didn't care.

The good news is that it only took a day for the interest to come back. I've already accomplished the most important thing I will do today - I woke up with an erection.

Interesting to read of your experience with Famotidine. I had a very similar reaction to regular dosage for reflux. I talked with my GP (who is aware of my wish to go M to E and with whom we socialise) and he laughed saying; 'Isn't that what you wanted anyway?' We did some further research and now I am on Omeprazole 20mg which has no impact on my libido.

There's some evidence that omeprazole can lead to both impotence and breast development. Maybe that's why I'm happy to continue to take this (by prescription) over the long haul. Manages gastric reflux really well for me, so I can eat and drink pretty much anything.

To me, NSAID type of pain killer reduce even more libido than famotidine.

But I suggest not to eat not fully cooked meat, iced drinks, salad as your stomach produce less acid than normal if you take that medicine.
