Maybe Ranger can have a career path separate from yours while still firmly attached:

Rog,
All parents experience empty nest syndrome. They start out young. As they grow up, your relationship with them changes dramatically. Eventually, you realize they are adults.
Despite your desire to protect them, as a parent, you must learn to let them thrive. That will mean that they have to strike out and make it in this harsh cold world themselves. Sure, they might come home to do laundry or to borrow money.
Nevertheless, you have to realize that you've raised, educated, fed, and given Ranger the values and support he needs. It's time to cut the apron strings and let him start a life of his home.
With a tear in your eye, you will watch him drive away with boxes of his stuff in the back seat. You will wonder if he is eating right, how is he able to pay the bills, can he find true love. In your head you will know that he has to have his own life. Your heart will not agree - it will ache and pine away for his return.

Rog,
I would have quite the empty "nest" if Ranger ever departed, especially if he took his two pals with him.
I know he could never survive without me. He would fall on hard times almost immediately.

He'd always be taken advantage of.
Not to mention how often he'd be stood up.

Now, if you could just teach him to make coffee, fry bacon, scramble eggs and get the paper out of the driveway, you're morning would be so much less hectic.

I don't want him outside without me, the neighbor's dog might get him
Not sure Ranger near a frying pan sounds like a winning play either, he might jump in and then what would I have?

A can a mace will protect him from the doggie. Also, we'll get him a 9" apron that says, "kiss the cook".
