Thanks. That's a photo of Alessandro Moreschi dubbed "The Last Castrato", though in his recordings there are other castrati. The recordings were made in 1902 and 1904 so I assume the photo is at least that old.

Jesus A. once read over them and said that they were essentially just like an ID or driver's license. Name, age, where they came from, that they were properly castrated, who did it, how old they were when it happened, etc. Not all of the characters are there, though. Some cropping had taken place when the image was reproduced for the book it came out of.
